Question about Troy Bilt Tb320bv Spring Assist Blower/Vac

2 Answers

Troy Built 320BV leaf blower (two identical ones, actually) won't start and have less than 5 and 20 hours on them. not getting a spark with the spark plug out, but with a non-descript plug, it will jump a 1/8" gap. Checked plugs and bought new ones - all okay. When push the fuel prime button 10 times, on choke and follow directions for starting, plug remains dry. Won't start even, briefly if we put gas in behind plug, either; also is there a carb. adj. screw and if so, how many turns to be open?

so, that might address the problem of no fuel on the spark plug after priming, but not the fact that there is not spark across the plug (the relatively new one that came with the blower, or brand new one - tried two different equivalent brands) when it's out, but do get a spark with a non-descript plug -that's the case with both blowers

  • libbymacd May 19, 2009

that's exactly what we have already done and with the spark plug that came with the blower and a new one, we don't get a spark, but if we use a non-descript plug, we get a spark that will jump a 1/8" gap (see my original comments above) The man who is trying to help me can usually fix ANYTHING and happened to already have an identical blower in his shop that he hasn't been able to start, either. I mean this man is amazing and that's the only reason I tried this site because I was unprepared for him not to be able to fix it - thanks for your help - any other suggestions? We can try the fuel tank idea, but he said we should at least be able to get it to start briefly when he squirted gas into where the spark plug goes and put the non-descript one in there - the one that will spark - no luck

  • libbymacd May 19, 2009

no - it WON"T start when pumping prime bulb or squirting gas in the carb. - that's the second part of the problem. If we could at least get it started that way, we would know it was only a gas supply issue, maybe. We are NOT getting a spark with the installed, or new spark plug - but can use a non-descript one and get a spark that will jump a 1/8" gap! Weird, weird.

If a small engine wont start its usually one of two problems, its not getting gas, or its not getting spark. easy way to find out if its getting a spark is to remove the plug, put it back back in the connector and just let it hang down while you try to start it. you should see a bright blue spark, if you dont try changing the spark plug. if its getting a spark come back on this site and i'll help you trouble shoot it.

I suggest you open the fuel tank and "fish" up the fuel line hose with
the filter attached. Simply blow out the filter. That should allow your
engine to get necessary fuel to carbuetor. This is 90% of today's no
    start problems.

1st how old is the gas and 2nd how long did it sit for since you last
used it? If there was any old fuel left in before now (more than 14
days) than it is possible your carb needs cleaning. If it's less than
14 days then you might want to check the compression. IF you have good
compression, then you might want to take it to a service center to have
    it diagnosed.

machine will only start when pumping primmer bulb or squirting fluid in
the carburetor than stops. the fuel line has broken off, in most small
carburetors this is a ongoing problem.old fuel will crystallize when
left in tank for a long time.plugging up ports, fuel lines, small
screen in carburetor.fuel lines will dissolve clogging carb.also the
gas will evoporate leaving the oil behind clogging up carb.the thing to
do is remove carb. and clean out, replaceing gaskets or fuel line if
necessory.use carb cleaner to clean out carb.make sure to make note
where fuel line go.the fuel filter broke off of fuel line letting
debris get in carb plugging it up.the muffler is known to clog up a lot
on these machines where thay want run. the compression should be 60 to
120 lbs any thing below 60 is junk. when adjusting the carb screws turn
in all the way than turnout 1 1/4 turns turn in slow untail machine
runs also you need to check for spark by removing plug and grounding
aginst engine to chech spark, ok.a new spark plug would be a good ideal
too , if you are going to make these repairs use new fuel line and
    filter,hope this helps

You need to check for spark first. It should be able to jump a 1/8"
gap to ground if the ignition system is OK. Also, when you try to
start it, note whether the spark plug comes out wet or dry. If it's
wet, the problem is most likely ignition. If it's dry, the problem is
either carb or compression (leaking valves, etc.). Let me know what
    you find.

If the ignition is functioning correctly, it should be able to jump a
1/8" gap to ground. Make sure the ignition module to flywheel gap is
0.010" and check for proper spark. If it has weak spark still, the
problem is with the ignition module and it will need to be replaced.

My Blower dies after about 15 min. Then it will

I think its the ignition module. To test the module put 2 spark testers inline with each other and see if it will jump both.
If you dont have 2 testers then use it till it dies and try to start immediately with a prime. If it wont start then module is suspect.
Most manufacturers have lifetime warranty on thier modules ( I am unsure about MTD) so double check before you just go out and buy one.

Leaf blower won't start. I think it's the module

If you haven't done it already, install a new plug. It's possible you're being fooled by a faulty/fouled plug. A fouled plug may not spark visibly - like if there is dirt down in the recesses of plug around the electrode. It would be a good idea to check it with a new plug before spending $80 bucks for a new ignition module.

The leaf blower won't start and I did change the spark plug and last time it run for like 30 sec. before it shut down again.

Main cause of small gasoline engine failure is carburetor clogged. Try spraying carburetor cleaner into carburetor and intake. Check if unit has air cleaner. If engine starts briefly with cleaner then carburetor needs manual cleaning. Carburetor removal and overhaul.

Wont start, not getting fuel, checked lines, carb and used starter fluid, runs but won't continue to run

You may need to do a more detailed cleaning on the carburetor. I like to use a Den Tek Brush, (used for cleaning teeth), to get into the small ports. They work great for this job. You may also need to check the small screen in carb. It gets blocked with debris. If you need further assistance, please contact me.

If the either burned, then you have a fuel problem. Make sure the fuel filter (in the tank) and the lines are all clear. If so, then you my need to rebiud the carburator.
