Re: voltage

You can plug 220 volt into 120 power outlet (will not generate full power but will not burn). However 120 volt will burn if plugged into 230 volt outlet.

120 volt Kirby vacuums would need at least 1000watt step down transformer. 220 / 230 / 240 volt - don't matter.

We also do conversions on Kirby vacuums. A bit pricy but we can do it

Gain access to the electrical connection with voltmeter set to 110 v ac check for voltage on both sides of switch. If voltage is present on outlet side follow output wire to start relay ck for power on out put side of relay. if power follow output wire to motor if voltage is present replace motor ! Be careful where you touch when probing contacts !

Hooking wires back correct to power swtch

Issues such as digging into the power switch is best left to a repair facility. I would take it to them to determine the correct order.

It came with a american plug and when we put a converter to australian plug on it it only shows 220w instead of 240 which is what we have in australia. Don't want to plug it in and it blow up on me.

I think you mean 220 volts, versus 220 watts. The difference between 220 & 240 volt equipment is usually just a matter of nomenclature -- no significant difference in terms of operating the equipment.

The vacuum is 110 / 120 volt since it has an "American" plug on it. If the plug is swapped for an "Australian" plug (or adapted) and plugged into the wall, the vacuum will be connected to 220 volts -- this would destroy the motor.

You would need a transformer to step down the Australian voltage to 110 / 120 volts. If you plug it in without a transformer, it will surely burn up the motor.

More info, let me know.

I have a Ferguson step down transformer that takes input as 240V and outputs 115v The model is : TS 115/2000EC I need the wiring diagram for the output side

If it is 240 to 120/115, there should be two high side wires and two low side wires and ground wires, isn't that true?
Please post back, thanks.

One day, I pressed the "on" button and it didn't start...had no problems whatsoever before. The inside hose is clear-fan turns-no visible breaks in the electrical cord or plug...

You need to measure for voltage inside the machine between the white wire and black wire from the power cord. If zero, the cord is likely broken at or near the plug end. This is a common problem if one pulls the plug by yanking on the cord instead of pulling on the plug directly. In any case, try cutting the cord off a little way back from the plug, and fit a new replacement plug from a home center or hardware store. If the voltage test above showed line voltage (115 volts AC in the US), then turn the switch to on, and measure for voltage between the white wire and the motor side of the switch. If good, then likely there is a motor brush problem or a broken winding in the motor. Repair of this usually requires dis-assembly of the housing around the motor. Hope this helps!
