If the CPU heatsink is not clogged with dust and lint completely, you can use canned air and just blow it inside the laptop through the openings on the bottom and on the sides. It’s nice as a precaution measure, but it might not work if your laptop already has a problem and the heatsink is completely clogged.

  1. Open the laptop case, so you can access the CPU fan and the heatsink. In some cases you can access the heatsink through the latch on the bottom of the laptop. Sometimes you have to open the laptop case all the way down.
  2. Carefully disconnect the fan cables on the system board and remove the fan. If the fan makes unusual sound when it spins (grinding sound), I would recommend to replace the fan.
  3. Clean the fan and the heatsink with compressed air.
  4. I would also recommend removing old thermal grease from the CPU and applying new grease for better heat conductivity.

Shuts down unexpectingly when running game programs

Is the Laptop Overheating? During intense game play your Laptop will Overheat if it's not getting sufficient air flow. Try cleaning the Fan, vents, heatsing with Compressed Air, Improve air flow through the Laptop, a Laptop Cooler is a option. Try shutting down unnecessary processes, I use freeware RAZER GAME BOOSTER, you configure what you want to shut down: Remember, Your machine usually shuts down for a good reason, it's trying to protect vital components. Overheating will fry the CPU, Graphics Adapter, etc.

Sounds like you have dust and dirt blocking your air flow. You probably need to take the laptop apart to get to the CPU fan and heat dissipation unit. You need to clean out all the dust in there to let the air flow freely. Get a service manual to help you take the laptop apart or find a local repair expert.

This isn't a true gaming laptop, and the stresses hardcore gaming is putting on the chip is probably causing it to overheat. I'd guess its running at 90 degrees from what you describe and which is why its shutting down.
Download a copy of Everest system analysis and see what the CPU temp and MOBO temps are.

My compaq presario v2000 often shuts down unexpectedly

Hi. Thanks for your question.
My first guess would be that your laptop is overheating. To confirm this you could download program called speedfan using this link please click donwload and once downloaded install on your computer.
Once you have this program you can monitor your computers temperatures and see if they're rising before laptop shuts down.
Laptops often overheat while being used on beds, carpets or any not flat solid surface. This causes air vent at the bottom of laptop to be blocked. That vent is crucial for laptops cooling. The other reason for laptop overheating could be dust and dirt that clogged any visible vents. Removing dust is fairly easy and can be done with little paint brush and can of compressed air which can be bought from any computer shop and some supermarkets.
I hope this helped you to understand your problem better. Please do not hesitate to ask more questions if this is needed. Thank You for using FixYa

Overheating hp compaq 6735s

The overheating problem can be caused by a faulty fan and or dust clogging the fan and heatsink assembly. If the fan deos not spin freely then it is faulty, also loosen the dust and vacuum the dust from the fan and heatsink.

Shuts down

Hi there.
It sounds like it is overheating.
I would recommend you buy a can of compressed air and give short bursts through the air vents and the CPU fan which will be located underneath the laptop, once you are happy that all the dust is out of the system try running the laptop again to see if it shuts down, If it doesn't then that will have been the problem.
Please keep me posted with the results.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!
