Panicware Pop-Up Stopper Companion for PC

Adult pop-up problem (by 2 users)

By paulrmc - usenet poster

I have suddenly developed a problem with adult popup
ads.  When I turn my computer on, it boots up fine, but
when I launch Internet Explorer, an adult popup ad now
comes up in a second window at the same time my home page
comes up in another window.  I figure there is something
hiding somewhere on my system causing this, but cannopt
find it.  Any ideas how to stop this disturbing occurance
every time I launch Explorer the first time after turning
the computer on?  Thanks!

This Problem has been added to the Share Your Expertise Page under "My Work Queue".

Hi Steven - It sounds like you've been hijacked.  If you go to this page
at Jim Eshelman's site, here:  http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm and wait a
little bit (be patient), an analysis of a number of possible parasites
on your machine will be made to help you identify and remove them.
NOTE:  You will need to disable Ad Blocking in Zone Alarm 3.x, if
present or any other Ad Blocking software which interferes with Java
Scripting for this scan to work.  You should get a message between the
two lines of **** giving the results of the scan.

For the general hijack case, the best way to start is to get Ad-Aware
6.0, Build 162 or later, here:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/sup port/download/.  Update and run this
regularly to get rid of most "spyware/hijackware" on your machine.

Another excellent program for this purpose is SpyBot Search and Destroy
available here:  http://security.kolla.de/  SpyBot Support Forum here:
http://www.net-integration.net /cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.cgi.   I
recommend using both normally.  After fixing things with SpyBot S&D, be
sure to re-boot and rerun SpyBot again and repeat this cycle until you
get a clean "no red" scan.

Note that sometimes you need to make a judgement call about what these
programs report as spyware.  See here, for example:
http://www.imilly.com/alexa.ht m

Lastly, a very useful utility for examining your system and correcting
problems is Hijack This, which you can download here:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~me rijn/files/hijackthis.zip  See also,
HijackThis Quick Start Help, http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ (Recommended)
This site has a number of useful references and information also:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/art icles/hijacked/  and here
http://www.spywareinfo.com/dow nloads.php

Another program giving a good inventory of all of the possible start
vectors is AutostartExplorer, here:  http://www.misec.net/aexp.jsp
While it doesn't allow control of startups, it's extremely comprehensive
in examining all of the possible sources.  Highly Recommended

Next, go here:  http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL .shtml and get Mike Lin's
Startup Control Panel applet.   A somewhat more difficult to use but
more extensive program to do the same thing is StartupList from here:
http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicef iles/index.html, or

hi ,
I think ,u could have installed some adult peogram in
ur computer which makes the pop up come up every time .
First we have to find out whether the adult program is
installed in ur computer or not.
  Lets check that first,

FIRST STEP :

 ( For windows XP )
click START -- > Go to CONTROL PANEL -- >
 ( For windows 98/Me )
cliick START ---> Go to SETTINGS -- > CONTROL PANEL

In  CONROL PANEL --> click ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS

Now u'll have a list of programs , u have to check in the
list of prgrams whether u have that adult program in
there. If its there , u have to select that and remove
from that.

SECOND STEP:
click START --> click RUN --> in RUN

type MSCONFIG and click OK

U'll have SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY

under that u have tab called STARTUP

click on that and now u'll have lots of programs which
will have check marks in all the options.
Now try to find the adult program or the website thats
popping up , if u feel  that u see something up there,
uncheck that particular option,
don't worry .. u can guess some options up there and
uncheck those , this is not goin to affect ur computer in
any way. after unchecking some options u've guessed,

 click APPLY and click OK/CLOSE
Now it'll ask u to restart the computer ,just restart the
computer.

 FInal step:
Open up ur internet explorer ..(don't get oline , just
open it up )
On the top click on TOOLS , cilck INTERNET OPTIONS
under the general tab , under TEMPROARY INTERNET FILES
click on SETTINGS , Now another windows comes up
 click on VIEW FILES ,
Now u'll have a window coming up with lots of files
just click any single file in that window .
hold the CTRL key and press the key "A" , now all the
files will be selected in that window , now press DELETE
in ur keyboard , click YES , Now close all ur windows .

Restart the computer
Get online , open ur internet explorer
check whether the adult pop up is coming or not

If still have the same problem , just reply me to my email

     " jogesh4 @hotmail.com "
i'll reply u immediately
Thank You
Jogesh

If you have IE 6, try this:

Go into "Internet Options -> Accessibility -> User style sheet"
and deselect "Format documents using my style sheet" if checked.
Some sites use ActiveX to place a porn pop-up page on your
computer and configure IE to use it all the time.

Try these:
1) Right click on internet explorer to open Internet
Properties. Make sure that the only address appearing in
your home address box is your home address. You can click
on use default tab and that will return it to the original
home address. You can alkso type in and address you want
to appear upon opening Internet Explorer.

2) Check Start Up under the Windows folder in Windows
Explorer and make sure no adult links are stored there. If
so just delet it. I doubt it but you never know.

3) Another option is to download a Pop up Stopper program
off the web. This will prevent and second window from
opening up. Try www.downloads.com and search for pop up
stoppers. Or try www.panicware.com and download Pop up
Stopper for free. Look for the free version. It works, I
have it. Also clean up you history and temp folders and
delete those web site linhks that get stored there every
time you go to a web site.   Hope this helps!
