Can I replace heater element my self?

We ordered the part and took the back panel off. Not sure where to go from here.

Can you wire up the heating element in a hot water heater wrong

Turn off the breaker inside your main electric panel providing power to the water heater. Most electric water heaters use a 30-amp double-pole circuit breaker.
2 Look for the panels attached with screws to the side of the water heater. Depending on the size of the water heater, you will have one or two panels. Remove the screws from the panels to release them.
3 Remove the insulation you exposed when removing the side panels. Depending on the age of the water heater, the insulation is fiberglass or closed-cell extruded polystyrene foam. Wear safety goggles and gloves when removing fiberglass insulation.
4 Pull the plastic safety cover from the element face. This cover snaps on and off the element and thermostat.
5 Hold a noncontact voltage detector next to the wires connected to the element face, and next to each wire connected to the thermostat. If electricity still is present in the water heater, the voltage detector emits an audible alarm and its light flashes.
6 Loosen the two element screws. Remove the wires from beneath the screws. Make a note of the element wattage printed on the side of the element face.
7 Turn the dial on a multimeter to Rx1k (resistance times 1,000 ohms). Touch one of the screws on the face of the element with one of the multimeter probes; place the remaining probe on the remaining screw. A 3,500-watt element should register 16 ohms, a 4,500-watt element should register between 12 and 13 ohms, and a 5,500-watt element should register between 10 and 11 ohms. Replace the element if it does not register on the multimeter.
8 Leave one of the probes touching one of the screws on the element face. Touch the other probe to any metal part of the water heater. If the multimeter needle moves, the heater element is grounded, and it must be replaced. Make sure you test both screws on the face of the element.
9 Touch each screw with one of the multimeter probes. Place the remaining probe against the metal base attached to the element where it enters the water heater. The element is bad and must be replaced if the needle on the face of the multimeter moves.
10 Attach the wires back to the face of the water heater element. Snap the plastic cover back over the thermostat and the element. Reinstall the insulation and attach the panels to the side of the water tank. Turn the breaker on to the water heater.

Test and replace a heating element:
  1. Turn off power at the electric service panel and post a sign warning others not to turn it on.
  2. Remove the access panel on the electric water heater.
  3. Disconnect one of the element wires and set a multimeter to RX1000 (resistance times 1,000). Touch one probe to an element mounting bolt and the other to each element terminal screw, in turn. If the tester displays anything but infinity ( open circuit), replace the element.
  4. If necessary, set the multimeter to RX1 and touch the probes to the terminal screws. If there is any resistance reading at all ( closed circuit), then the element is good. If not, replace it. Both upper and lower elements are tested in the same manner.
  5. To remove the element, first drain the heater.
  6. Disconnect the remaining element wire. Remove the mounting bolts holding the element in place. Remove the element.
  7. Replace the heating element with one of the same model, shape, and rating. Make sure you also replace any installation gaskets.
Test and replace a high-limit cutoff:
  1. Disconnect power to the heater at the electric service panel and post a sign warning others not to turn it on.
  2. Remove the upper access panel and push the reset button.
  3. Replace the access panel and turn the power back on. If the water is hot, the reset was the problem. If not, you'll need to turn the power off again and reopen the access panel.
  4. Use a multimeter to test the cutoff terminals for continuity. If faulty, replace with an exact replacement part.

After connecting a drain line to the pressure relief valve of my MR85245 water heater, I now have water leaking badly out of the heating element door.


Turn off the electricity.
Turn off the water valve going into tank.
Open a bathtub spout to let hot water pressure off the tank.
Check top of tank for any leaks.
Open the top access panel and see if element is leaking.
Open bottom access panel and see if lower element is leaking.
The reduced pressure on the tank will slow the leak.

If element is the problem, you can squeak by for a while by turning on the hot water heater only when you need hot water.

These elements may be available locally, but they are not the same as 'ordinary' tank-type electric heater elements that you buy at the hardware store.
Buy more than 1 element because the Marathon elements have problems.
One of the reported problems with marathon elements is the high price of stainless steel replacement elements.

How do you take the bottom front panel off? The dryer motor works, but it doesn't get hot (just warm). I thought if I took the front panel off I could clean it and maybe that would solve the problem.


It doesn't get hot since one of a series heater element is burnt out. It needs to replace the heater element. You have to access it from the back panel of the unit. To change the heater element, you don't need to take the bottom front off. Good luck.

Question where did spark come from. Is element broken? If came out of back connection then connect and element should be replaced, If element is worn or broken then replace element, easy to fix yourself, just make sure you disconnect power for safety.

Defrost does not work properly, continues to freeze up element in lower freezer compartment, shutting down cooling in upper refrigeration unit. We continue (bout every two weeks) to take wall unit off and...


i noticed ice build up towards the bottom right corner of the back panel (in freezer)....i diconnected power...took the back panel off .....fan had frost on it....coil was iced up.... then on the back of the refrigerator i accessed the control board....plugged the power back on ...i jumped the line to the heater...heater didnt work....then checked resistance through the heater (checked ok)....

it came down to me replacing the defrost thermostat which is in series with the heater....defrost now works fine ...which is every 60hrs for 45 minutes on mine.

If it does not dry them all then the element is a good guess or the thermostat.

If it dries them but not all the way check that the moisture sensor is not turned down too far.

Gas dryers use an electric ignition device rather than a pilot light to light the gas heater: An element becomes hot and glows like the filament in a lightbulb. Electric ignition systems are always sealed; you can't adjust or repair them. If an electric ignition device fails, call a professional service person for replacement.

Electric heating elements, found in electric dryers, are self-contained units located in the back of the dryer. A defective heating element is frequently the source of no-heat or drying problems. Remove the back service panel to gain access to the elements.

The heating elements are located inside the heater ducts. If you think a heating element is faulty, test it with a volt-ohm-milliammeter (VOM) set to the RX1 scale. Disconnect the leads from the power terminals and clip one probe of the VOM to each terminal. The meter should read about 12 ohms. If the reading is higher than 20 ohms, the heater is faulty and should be replaced. Replace a faulty heater with a new one of the same type and electrical rating. A heater connected to a 115-volt line usually has an 8.4-ohm resistance; a heater connected to a 220-volt line usually has 11 ohms resistance.

The heater may also malfunction because it's grounded. To test for this, set the VOM to the RX1 scale and remove the leads to the heater. Clip one probe of the VOM to a heater terminal and touch the other probe to the heater housing. The meter needle should jump to a fairly high reading. If the needle flicks back and forth at a low reading, the heater is probably grounded and should be replaced. Here's how to replace the heater:

Step 1: Remove the back of the dryer. If necessary, also remove the cabinet top.

Step 2: Disconnect the leads and remove the screws that hold the duct in position. Then lift the entire heater unit out of the dryer.

Step 3: Remove the screws that hold the heating element in the duct.

Step 4: Slip the new heating element into the heating duct the same way the old one came out. Be careful not to damage the resistance coils. Replace the screws that hold the heating element in the duct, reconnect the leads, and screw the unit back into position.

Servicing the Fan

The most common dryer fan problem is lint clogging the air passages through the heater and through the dryer drum. To clear a clogged air passage, remove the back service panel of the dryer and back out the screws holding the air duct in place. Then reach into the duct and remove all the lint and dirt possible. Reassemble the parts.

Also inspect the fan for a loose screw connection where the motor shaft is set on the dryer's drum. Remove the back service panel, tighten the screw, and replace the panel.

right you have 2 parts for heating the water you have the heater element you can test this simply by undoing the wires making sure to wright down order they go in get an old wire with a plug on the end attach each colour in the order you took the proper wires of plug it in if the element is working then you will feel the heat and see it glow if it doesnt then its a faulty element if it does then it will be your thermostats both element and thermostats are located at the front behind the front panel this needs taking off
