IS this also why the freezer does not blow cold air? Both side blow warm air. ANd I don't know if this would help but I have an Amana fridge Model#ASD2620HRB.

  • barnettjerem May 16, 2009

My Amana refrigerator stopped blowing cold air in the freezer and the fridge 4 days ago. I hav eunplugged the fridge for 2 days and when i plugged it back up the compressor makes aloud hissing sound and sputters. The control setting are at the coldest, the fan in the back is working, the fan in the freezer is working and blows air into the fridge but the air is warm. Ihave cleaned the coils underneath the fridge. I have let the fridge run for about 14 hours now but there is no change in the temp. What has caused this problem and how can I fix it without calling an expensive repair tech?

Does that mean I need a new compressor? I know you said I need a tech But Im trying to see if it would be worth the parts and labor or anew fridge Since I cant fix it my self.

Yes exactly the compressor is faulty and it needs replacement.as the compressor is a costly part to be replaced.it will cost near to $150.but as you said that refrigerator is just two years old.so as per that i suggest you that contact the dealer from where you got the refrigerator, because the new  refigerator has mostly 1 or 2 year warranty but many companies offer 5 year warranty for the compressor, and so if your amana refroigerator dealer has provided that warranty you will get the compressor free of charge replaced.but if its not under warranty.then also replacing compressor is a big thing.as the refigerator is just 2 years old.you can go for compressor replacement.because the refrigerator lasts near to 5 years without any problem.and new compressor is always cheaper then going for new refrigerator.but still if you are going for new refrigerator go for whirlpool or samsung brands.as they offer good  warranty on parts and provides good service. for the new compressor you can get at  www.repairclinic.com or at  www.partselect.com also you can get this compressor at local fridge repair shop. and final confirmation.yes your compressor is bad.that is confirmed. Please do rate the solution.Thank you for using fixya.keep updated. thanks

This sounds like the compressor module has failed, nothing else would account for the noise, u need to get a repair man out to check the pressure readings, this requires special HVAC testing equip.

In almost all refrigerators, the cold air is originally pumped into the freezer. There is a door between the freezer and fridge that opens more to make it cooler. Check to see if you have spilled something in your freezer that is blocking the passage between the two. Also, check to make sure that you don't have so much stuff in your fridge that may be keeping the air from flowing in.

You do need air to flow around the coil, so it should be free of dust and far enough away from the wall to allow air flow if the coils are on the back.

    or try this

If a refrigerator doesn't cool at all, the problem
is often with basic electrical controls-almost never with a need for a
boost of refrigerant. Do not assume that the problem is related to the
compressor or the sealed hermetic system-these types of problems happen
only rarely. It may have dirty condenser coils, a door that doesn't
seal tightly, or a defective temperature control.

    1) Check the cold control. Be sure it is set to "cold." Normally, the
temperature inside the refrigerator should be about 37 degrees F.

    2) Listen for the freezer fan inside the freezer. When the freezer fan
is running, it means the defrost timer and the cold control in the
refrigerator are both set to cool.

    3) Listen for the compressor fan, where the compressor is located
(typically behind or beneath the refrigerator. When the freezer fan is
operating the compressor fan should also be working (most of the time).

    4) If one of the fans is not working or the compressor is off, the refrigerator will offer very little cooling

My freezer works but my refrigerator wont stay cold...getting warm. it is 4 years old. what could be wrong?

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

Refrigerator not cooling...makes hissing noise

From your problem description I would say it sounds like maybe the condenser fan is not running. If that fan does not run, the compressor will overheat, and get very unhappy, LOUDLY. There is a fiberboard cover on the back of the unit, unplug the unit, remove the cover and inspect the fan, it should turn freely if you nudge it with your finger. If it does not turn freely, you will need to make it so by lube, removing foreign object (dead mouse once for me) dust dragons etc... or replace the fan if necessary.

What is the purpose of two temperature control nobs when there is a single compressor in my samsung 280 lts fridge

1.If this is only a fridge the one knob will be for the min and the other for the max.
max. : As soon as you switch the fridge on it will cool down the fridge to max cool down temp. example -2deg.
min. : As soon as the fridge reaches the max cool down temp and it had switch the compressor off, the fridge will start to warm up slowly, by the time it reaches the min allowed warming up temp, it will switch the compressor back on and do the cycle all over again.
2. If it is a fridge/freezer setup, the one knob will be for the fidge and the other for the freezer. If the temp in the freezer is fine a fan is activated and blows all the cool air to the fridge and controls the temp. by activating the fan.

if you can hear a fan blowing in the freezer that is probably not the problem. If it is at all possible could you clear out the fridge overnight. If so, do so, unplug refrigerator with doors open overnight and plug it in in the morning. If it returns to cooling you probably have a defrost problem, but you at least have a couple days to fix it.

Freezer and fridge not cooling properly

Clean it up. Check under it and behind, clean ,vacume and or blow out all dust and check the fins on the bottom, a soft brush and portable air compressor work really well but very dusty, take out side if possible, or just vacume really well.

Bottom of freezer/fridge only getting cold.

Thre is a fan inside the freezer which circulates the cold air around both the fridge and the freezer compartments.
You should be able to feel cold air blowing around the inside, particularly at the top of the freezer.
If the defrost thermostat fails open, the internal fan (depending on freezer) will stop and this can be the cause of the freezer being warm at the top and no ice.
You say the bottom of the freezer is blowing cold, but are you sure its blowing, as it can feel like a cold blow. Of course the fan could have failed or may be the defrost heater itself.
