Question about Dell Dimension 4500 PC Desktop

1 Answer

I need to replace the dead hard drive in my dell dimension 4500s. Current dead drive is a 40GB Ultra ATA-100 (7200 RPM). Can someone tell me what I can upgrade to. I think I have the flat data cable so it has to be compatable with that. Help!!

    Thanks Joe.

I'm totally clueless about this stuff. I'm reading something about SATA now. I don't know what that means. My data cable is flat like a ribbon. Am I going to have trouble upgrading?

Ok. I'm checking out Seagate. Also, once I find a compatable new drive for my computer, do I just install the original Windows XP install disk to install windows on my machine?

You can replace the hard drive with a larger capacity hard drive. Best bet would be a 250GB .
Hard drive have come down in prices, you should be able to get a 250 GB. for less then $100.
Western Digital ansd Seagate are my preference.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

SATA drives are the newest drives. They are serial and the motherboard has to be compatible with SATA ports on it. Serial drives can be a pain to install in Windows, because Windows requires that the SATA (serial) drivers be installed prior to installing the operating system. My clients are often misplacing there SATA drivers in which case I have to hunt forever and a day to find the right ones. Especially with Vista!

My Dell Lap Top needs a hard drive installed

any 2.5" ATA-6 (a.k.a. Ultra ATA) will work

Your laptop came with a:
Ultra ATA Hard Drive, 4200RPM hard drive

I suggest this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136129

But, Any 2.5" ATA-6...also known as ultra ATA, will suffice..........go with 5400 RPM speed drive.......I suggest either Western Digital or Seagate...as they are the most dependable brands of hard disc drives.

And to replace it, here is an online service manual to guide you:

Replacement hdd for a Toshiba MK4026GAX (ATA)

Any brand-new ATA hard-drive (you probably won't find any new hard-drive smaller than 80GB) will be compatible. Pay a few extra dollars for a 7200 RPM drive (rather than 4200 or 5400 RPM).

You can put as large a hard drive in there as you like. If the bios does not recognize the entire thing you can format and partition it using the HD manufacturer's software.

Hard drive replacement

I'll put it like this; The fact that it's and Ultra ATA 100 interface and that it's a 5400 RPM drive is somwhat of a concern.. Don't know if your laptop will support the 5400 RPM speed, but the good news is,it won't hurt your laptop to try it.
Also, I don't think the Ultra ATA 100 interface will be a problem, maybe require you to change BIOS setting (maybe).
