GE Washer overfilled, now won't spin

My GE Washer recently overfilled while filling with water to begin a new load and wouldn't stop until I pressed the start/stop button.  To get the water to drain, I placed it on spin and it drained the water, but never spun.  Now, the machine will not spin at all, and no matter what cycle you set it on, it will just start agitating without refilling, but still, it will not spin.  It's acting like it thinks that it is already full of water.  Any suggestions on what caused the original overfill or what may be causing everything else???????  Please Help!

Could possibly be that the water level switch in the console has gone bad.  Sometimes the small hose that connects the basket and the switch can come off, causing the overfill.  Sounds like maybe the water switch has gone bad though if I were to guess at it.  If it goes bad, it will send the timer a signal that its full, when its not.  Could also be a bad timer, but that only happens on rare occasions, but it does happen.  Let me know how it goes or if you need break down instructions, etc.  Jim

Ok, dont know the model or type, but if its a newer unit, you should see 4 screws that hold the console onto the rear frame (should be on the very top of the console).  These could be phillips head screws, but most of the time they will be Torq head screws.  Remove these screws, and tilt the front cover of the console towards you.  Be sure that the unit is unplugged as well.  You will see the switch right behing the knob.  Make a note to how the wires go back on, and remove the wires from the switch.  Remove the small water hose (be sure that the hose isnt disconnected at this time, if it is, blow into the switch and see if it clicks at all).  There are a number of ways to remove these switches, but the common type is to look at it from behind.  You will see a small clip like thing made into the switch.  Slightly lift (or push down on the console slightly) and rotate the switch out.  Be sure to remove the knob as well.  Be sure that when you replace the switch, to rehook the small hose.  Also check to see how tight or loose it fits back on the switch.  If its to loose, cut a small amount to make it tighter.  If these dont look right, send me a model number and will see which one you have.  Let me know if you run into problems or need any other help.  Just looks like a big job, really very easy.

Grab the tube off the water level switch that comes from the bottom of the tub and blow it out so that the sand in the bottom won't be blocking the operation, pump out the water, secure the tube tightly to the pressure switch and retry.aff8f03.jpg

Lid is not locking properly, washer sensor is overfilling, and the washer wont spin

Check door switch: If the lid switch is bad it will not drain or spin. Try this test: With lid open let it finish wash cycle. Press lid switch down with screwdriver. Washer should begin draining. Release switch. Motor should stop. Press switch a second time. Washer should start spinning as it continues to drain. If motor doesn't come on while lid switch is pressed, replace the switch. OR

GE WWSE5200B1WW Top Load washer will not fill or agitate

Hi Scoti

I would start with water level pressure switch. It regulates how much water goes into washer and also stops overfilling..It may be defective and thinks washer is already full( hence no water and automatic drain spin) P#WH12X10093
Second thing to try is unplugging the washer for 15 min and letting all the voltage leave the control board. At this time you will reset the washer to default factory settings in case there was a computer glitch..

Good Luck

We put a heavy blanket in the washer and the load stopped suddenly with a washer full of water. It wouldn't spin or empty and made a weak sound but nothing worked. We had to manually empty the water....

Usually that means the drive belt is loose and slipping. You should be able to tighten or replace the belt.
To test the belt you have to remove the washer back.

Check the cold water hose. My brand new machine had this behavior until I discovered a kink in the cold water hose - works great now.

Occasionally it will overfill

The water level switch is your problem.
Open the control panel and remove the plastic hose from the level switch and blow through it.
Soap and dirt clog the bottom end and prevents the switch from stopping. The water continues to flow because of this blockage.
After you reattach the plastic hose , set the washer to spin and turn it on to reset the switch.

Remove the water level tube from the tub and clean out the gunk.
Reconnect it to the water level switch.
Set the machine to spin and run it.
