Question about Makita 12 Volt Cordless Drill/Driver Kit

Makita cordless drill 6011D

This drill smells like something is burning inside when its in use. I picked it up at a yard sale. The man said it has been in storage for a very long time. Should I take it apart and try to clean the insides? What could that burning smell be? It seems to run just fine ... unless you continuously run it...

It sounds as if the brushes may be bad / burnt / chipped. If you fire up the drill in a dimly lit area you will likely see sparks inside the unit. The smell is the ozone that the sparking creates.

I have an 18 volt DeWalt that sparks and smells like something inside is cooking if I use it. I use that drill occasionally and every time I do I think that sooner or later it is going to give up the ghost permanently.

Now, if I had a 120 volt plug-in-the-wall outlet drill that was doing that I'd deep six the drill and get a new one. They are cheap enough and you really don't want to be dealing with sparking with an item that could short circuit and cause some real harm or damage..

You could get it repaired, but that wouldn't be cost effective. Take a wire cutters, cut off the plug from the wire and discard.

The one thing I would not do with the drill is sell it at a yard sale. It just wouldn't very honest to do that.

good luck.

Here is the schematic for you: http://www.toolpartsdirect.com/cgi-bin/schematic.cgi/makita/6011D

If it is running just fine and meets your needs I would just keep on using it.

Why does my Makita 6011D cordless drill not work when my charged battery in installed? The battery does work on my Makita saw so I know it is not the battery.

Look inside where the Battery terminals connect.
THey are flat metal springs inside the drills Battery hole.
Make sure the are not compressed down causing them not to touch the battery terminals of the battery.
