does laptop work without external power supply,if no then Battery probably not charging Dell computers don't like oem power supplies as often need specific dell charger to suit model laptop so that laptop will recognise it and allow battery to charge

try in another laptop but 99% it wont work, buy a new one

Check the pin inside the connection (end of the cord) which you put into your machine, or check if the power connection on the circuitboard is damaged (you are able to wiggle it a little bit around)

Dell computer use the pin inside the connection from the adapter to recognise if the adapter you are using is a dell adapter or not. If the pin is damaged, or you are using an adapter from another brand. You will not be able to charge, but only power your pc.

check the output from charger using multimeter.

Sounds like there is a disconnect between the power in and the battery, probably a broken solder joint or a fuse. Unless you are a tech, send it in for repair.

use it on a differnet usb port
these portable hard drives have some issues with 1.1 usb ports

since putting back the old ones charges the battery, then the charger unit is good. its best to replace the old battery pack with the same rating. the charger might be having some difficulty due to a higher rating of the new one.

put a thin sticker on the opposite side of the golden pins and try again

firts make sure that your laptop is plugged into the wall, (if not the ipod drains the battery of the laptop jeje) then download the drivers for the ipod touch BEFORE you plug it in again...then plug in the ipod and try again....also make sure you have itunes so you can see if it recognizes your ipod.
