Try attachin the seperate cooling fan to the unit, or place the PS3 by an airconditioning vent to see if its a cooling problem, it is what it sounds like you are describing. I bought one of the fan units because mine is in an enclosed space without good air flow. If this helps, please give me a fixya rating.

Try cleaning the lens inside the disc tray. Swabbing the lens will work.

1. Switch the power switch into the "off" position then unplug every cord that is plugged into the console (power cord, TV plug-ins, controllers, internet, memory card).

2. Flip your Playstation 2 over carefully. There will be 4 soft square shaped pads; remove these from the console. If they are hard to remove, just use a screw driver to help.

3. Repeat this process to the 4 hard pads beneath. On the part that has vents, there will be 2 of these hard pads; make sure to remove these.

4. In the back of the Playstation, remove the warranty voiding tape.

5. If you have an internet adapter, remove it now before doing anything more. Carefully remove the top cover of the Playstation. Make sure not to rip the silver paper looking stuff connecting the top and bottom parts. This supplies the power for the on/off buttons.

6. Carefully remove the cover to the CD/DVD drive of the Playstation.

7. If there is a lot of dust/dirt on the surface of the whole thing, just swab with a dry/very lightly damp cotton swab. Swab the lens only with a dry swab. When finished, make sure that everything is dry.

8. Take the screws from the CD/DVD drive and return it to its proper place.

9. Return the main cover, screws, then pads to their original positions.

Do not press to hard on the lens or you could damage it.

My ps3 will not show i have a disk in the console. I tried cleaning the lens still no disk. Help?

Hello,

The problem is that the lens of your ps3 is either dirty or weak that it can no longer read any disc, i advice that you get a lens cleaner to clean the lens of your game, if after cleaning, problem persist, replace the lens on your ps3 so that your ps3 can continue to function as it use to function before.

Replace the lens on your ps3 and you will see that it will start reading discs.
You can also try the below procedure before replacing the lens,

1. Turn off Playstation®3.
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

The current Recovery Menu supports:
• Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
• Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
• Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
• Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
• Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
• System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System.

Take care.

Not reading disks

Hello,

The first thing to try would be a lens cleaning disc. The laser could be dusty preventing it from being able to read the disc.

You can get a lens cleaning disc kit at almost any store that sells dvd's and cd's.

Note: Do not spray compressed air directly at the laser.

You can however blow air through the vents to try and remove any dust from inside the playstation.

Try these two things, if it doesn't work or you have already tried these ideas post back and share the results. Thank you for choosing Fixya!

PS3 error 80010017 or game will start up but finish loading

Easy fix :)
Go into Account Management ([Friends] [Account Management]), de-activated and activated again.
If this does not work, then your HDD is corrupt.

It will not run the games or movies. The console turns on and acts like it is going to start running the game or movie and then stops.

ok it sounds like the laser in your drive is gone bad. I have the same problem right now. without a good blu ray lens the drive cant read the disk and all you can do is fool around with the home screen. If its still under warranty send it in. otherwise, if you feel up to it order a new lens for your drive at www.thegamersfix.com. runs you abou 50 bucks or so depending on the drive you have. make sure you buy the correct lens kes 410a or 400a and be very careful when installing it so as not to dirty/scratch the new lens. You could also check for the drive alignment, but thats usually not the underlying issue.
