CAN'T INSTALL WINDOWS SERVICE PACK 3 (KB936929) and SONIC UPDATE MANAGER

WINDOWS XP SERVICE PACK 3 (KB936929) SONIC UPDATE MANAGER when i try to update my windows, i get the message: 'some updates could not be installed' followed by the specific message: Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929). worked out [with a great deal of time and effort] that it was this service pack that was giving me the repeated and repeated and repeated error message of Sonic Update Manager demand for a diskette that doesn't exist. [i worked out this connection via a file that loads and prompts the message - the file was called something like uhm.uh i worked this out with the timing of task manager... i found that file uhm.um on my hard drive, renamed it, uninstalled service pack KB936929 and am half alive to tell the tale.] but, i still have the ms icon in bottom rhs saying 'updates to install' - the yellow shield with the exclamation mark. Q1. how do i install this update (KB936929) without stirring up the sonic update manager trouble again as i am not sure i can face working out how to remove it again? do i need to update and, if not, then how do i stop the yellow shield icon from living in my box? and, Q2. why can't this update (KB936929) be installed of its own accord anyway? do i really want it? please send me an email directly and let me know when and where to come back to on this great web site. thanks.

Microsoft updates do not install

You have not said which OS you are using so; from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

When you try to install Windows updates from the Windows Update Web site, the Microsoft Update Web site, or by using Automatic Update, you receive a message that the update is not installed successfully. Additionally, the update is not displayed in the update history.

You may experience this issue in the following scenarios:

Scenario 1 You try to install updates after repair a Windows XP installation by using the Windows XP CD.
Scenario 2 You perform the following operations before you try to install Windows updates:

You perform a new installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).
You visit the Windows Update Web site, or the Microsoft Update Web site.
Note When you visit the update Web site, the latest version of Windows Update software will be installed in your computer.
You install Windows XP Service Pack (SP3) without a restart.
You try to install Windows updates after the install of Windows XP SP3.

Then cause ;

This issue occurs because the Wups2.dll file that is included in the latest version of Windows Update is not installed correctly.

For scenario 1, the registry entries that correspond to the Wups2.dll file are missing after the repair install of Windows XP. The release version of Windows XP does not contain the Windows Update software.

For scenario 2, the registry entries that correspond to Windows Update are changed back to the Windows XP SP2 version if you did not restart the computer before you install Windows XP SP3. The registry entries for the Wups2.dll file are changed to pointing to the Wups.dll file that is included in the release version of Windows XP SP2.
To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods;

Method 1: Download and install the Windows Update Agent,
For an x86-based computer; http://download.windowsupdate.com/WindowsUpdate/redist/standalone/7.4.7600.226/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

For an x64-based computer http://download.windowsupdate.com/WindowsUpdate/redist/standalone/7.4.7600.226/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe

Method 2: Register the Wups2.dll file,

To have MS register the Wups2.dll file in Windows for you, go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144#FixItForMeAlways.

If you prefer to fix this problem yourself,

To register the Wups2.dll file in Windows, follow these steps:

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Open the Command Prompt window. To do this, click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
b. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
net stop wuauserv

2. Register the Wups2.dll file. To do this, follow these steps:

a. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll

Note For a computer that is running Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
regsvr32 %windir%\syswow64\wups2.dll

b. Click OK if you receive a verification message.

3. Start the Automatic Updates service. To do this, type the following command at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:
net start wuauserv

4. Exit the Command Prompt window. To do this, type exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

How to install windowsxp kb936929 sp3 x86 debug enu on my laptop got this file from somewhere, confused of installing this ,do i have to make a iso image of this and then create cd and then install

I'd just go to windows update already on your laptop.

Start - All programmes - windows update (top left hand corner). If you choose the "custom" option for downloads, you should be able to see/check all the downloads and updates. These should also include SP3.

Problem = (windows service pack) + analogue power saving) + (sonic update) = dead pc for no apparent reason = reboots itself = grrrrr

Hi

Great so far you have excellent work in analyzing the problem now, to stop a paitcular update from being installed you have to
1.Go to Control Panel
2.Open Security Center
3. Click Automatic Updates
4. Choose the Option saying "Notify me but dont autoamtically download or install them"

By doing so the update manager will evrey time ask you which updates to download and install you simply have to click on the chekbox to accept or reject them. (But do read the instruction with the updates that, what will be the changes otherwise you may miss some imporatant update?)
This is what i have been doing over the years any till now I dont have problem with the update manager.

On March 6, 2008 Microsoft released Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Windows XP. Service Pack 3 contains all of the important Windows updates from previous service packs as well as additional updates that were released after Service Pack 2. To install Windows XP Service Pack 3 from the Internet on a home desktop computer use the Windows Update feature. CAUTION: If you have an HP Pavilion, HP Media Center or Compaq Presario desktop computer that has an AMD processor, your PC might encounter a startup problem after installing SP3 (or SP3 will not download from Windows Update). Before attempting to install SP3, install sp37394 - Microsoft Windows XP SP3 Upgrade Utility for systems with AMD processors .
