Verify it is your fax not the sending one  by doing a copy, then do a report of some sort. this will show us if the fault is in the optics or in print mechanism, if report is ok then it is the optics (clean glass) but I doubt this is your problem I reckon you get a blank mark down your report and copy that being the case then the fault is no toner left in print cartridge, replace cart

When i make copies on the machine, there is a wide black strip vertically on the copy

The one solution to ur problem is clean the scanner or optics of ur machine, here's the procedures lift the top potion of the control panel and u will see the scanner, then clean the optics with cleaned cloth be sure that there is no patch or any foreign object in optics area. Second solution is check is the drum life is due or check the surface of the drum if there is a vertical line in the surface that is the one caused of ur problem. It is necessarily to purchase the new drum unit. Hopefull this will help u.

Black strip in documents when I send a fax

If you lift up the top, like you are clearing a jammed original, you should see a piece of glass across the machine. Look for something on the glass, usually white-out, and clean it. Test by making a copy. If copy is ok, then you fixed the problem.

There is a white line running down each fax

Look on top of the drum unit for a blue slider to move back and forth 10 times. You may have a bad drum

You have white out or some other white substance blocking your scanner optics. I am assuming this is a thin blank line. What you need to do is make a copy of a document with your machine. You should see the very same blank line on your copy that your customer is seeing on their received fax. Now take this copy and place it in the document feeder the same way you placed the document when you made your copy. Now imagine this document going thru the feeder. The strip that is blank will "match up" with the white out or whatever is causing the blank line. You just need to open up the feeder section where the documents go in to be scanned and look for the thin strip of glass that runs from one side to the other. Using the copy you made with the blank line, use it to see exactly where the glass should have something stuck to it and clean it off with a soft clotch with a little glass cleaner on it. Go ahead and clean the while glass while you are in there. Once clean you can close it back up and run another copy to insure that all the lines are gone.

I have a black line showing up on my faxed documents. I have opened it up, changed the film and re- set it, but the problem persists. The machine is about 5 years old.

Most likely a fax has been sent or a page copied with 'white out' (Liquid Paper), still wet on the page. As the page feeds over the scanner, (a narrow strip of glass that runs across the width of the page along the feed path) the wet liquid paper comes off on the glass as a thin line and dries. Thereafter, when copying, scanning or sending a fax, the scanner light does not go through the liquid paper streak and the result when printed is a thin vertical line that runs the full length of the page.

If this is your problem: follow the path that the paper travels when sending a fax or making a copy, until you find the scanner (narrow glass strip). Take a clean, soft cloth and a small amount of methylated spirit (or white spirit) and remove the now dried Liquid Paper from the glass. Clean the whole strip ensuring that the glass is left clean and dry.

When you send a fax, the other person only gets lines on there copy, not the paper that i faxed

Make a copy with your fax machine. If your scanner is bad you should have a similar problem making copies. The same scanner is used to make a copy as is used to scan and send a fax. If the copy comes out bad your scanner is either dirty or bad. If you can see your copy but it just has a few lines running vertically up and down the page then you need to clean the scanner glass. This is a small strip of glass in the port where you feed it your originals.
Good Luck

1-take out cartridge and clean the inside , there may be toner on the lamps
2-take a look at the drum(shiny cylinder) does it have black rings?? replace
3-does it have scratches or grooves? replace
3-could be the lamps (long thin strip of lights) some of the lights are bad
