Question about Craftsman 17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model

Replaced battery for lawn tractor and nothing happens.

I have an older lawn tractor and bought a new battery. I didn't realize I needed a reverse terminal battery and ended up matching positive with negative. There were sparks when connecting the battery terminals. Nothing happened when trying to start. I took battery back to store and they tested it-it still is good. I bought the reverse terminal battery and still nothing happens when trying to start it. It's dead. Did matching positive with negative cause this even though the battery is still good, do I have a problem with the starter?

You probably just blew the fuse behind the ignition or the fuse link on the power to solenoid.

The charging system has diodes. In blowing the fuse, you may also have shorted the diodes. If you replace the fuse and it blows immediately, the diodes are history. Disconnecting the shorted diodes will allow you to run the tractor with a charged battery, but it will not charge the battery until the diodes are replaced. The correct diodes may be found through Sears, Rural King, TSC, and others.

2 things, one, the belt jumped track, broke, or melted in place, 2, the hydrostatic ****** is out of oil, you didn't say if it was hydro or not. I doubt that the gear box has gone bad, but I would put more blame on a belt or pulley. Check it out. Hope this helps.

My lawn tractor died and now is readind dead but the battery is new

Sounds like your charging system is burnt out or your battery cables wheren't tight enough when you reinstalled your new battery and as soon as you started it the first time and you ran the battery down it didn't charge, take the cables back off and clean them greese them up and put them back on and tight them up and charge the battery up and you should be good to go

Check that the blades are not engaged. If they are not engaged and you still have nothing, check battery cables tight. Then check the starting solinoid.

If you have any questions on how to do this or other related, just reply.
