Philips CD recorder CDR870 not recording

With every blank CD inserted, the display shows NO AUDIO. Pre recorded CDs play OK. Unable to record. I have recently aquired this machine and this is the first time I have attempted to do recordings. Am I doing something wrong?

Consumer CD recorders require CD-Audio or CD-Music blank CD's to record.

My 760 recorder keeps show no audio when I try to record. I've tried hooking it up serval ways no luck. However it plays perfect.

You can not use normal Data CDs. Use CD-R Digital Audio CDs or CD-R Audio recordable CDs. If you use correct Digital Audio Recordable CDs, it will show OPC. Once you press Recording, audio out is coming. Otherwise you can not listing to audio. Please read manual carefully. Above will solve your matter.

Have just purchased a secondhand Philips 570 cd recorder and purchased TDK blanks for my first recording test. While the disc was still in the machine it recorded and played back ok.However, after removing...

Are you sure the TDK blank had either AUDIO/MUSIC somewhere written on the disc...if not, then that is the problem. On the other hand it it should not have recorded or played back as you said it did.
If it did have Audio/Music written on the disc, then first of all give the laser a clean by using either a disc cleaner or better still, take the cover off and gain access to the laser, using a cotton bud, diped in INDUSTRIAL METHALATED SPIRIT (usually coloured purple) do not use medical metholated spirit as oily additives could be added and smear the laser lens. Dry off the lens with the dry end of the cotton bud. Do not soak the cotton bud in the spirit, just a very small amount will do !!!
If it does not work now, try using other good named branded Audio/Music CD-R discs as there appears to be such a variation in the quality of CD discs which is well documented !
Did you FINALISE the TDK disc before you removed it from you recorder??
I have a feeling its the TDK disk.....I avoid TDK if I can...Try Sony or Philips Audio/Music discs, very few failures for me with those brands.
Hope this has ben of some help...good luck

Discs to use?

Yes. On Page 9 of the Manual: http://download.p4c.philips.com/files/c/cdr778bk/cdr778bk_dfu_aen.pdf

"For recording use, special audio discs must be used (for music
only). These Discs bear the logos as shown below. The text
‘DIGITAL AUDIO’ is present!"

and...

"Your CD recorder is able to play:
- All pre-recorded audio CDs.
- All Audio CDR and Audio CDRW."

There is no capacity qualifier mentioned.

My cd recorder wont read blank cds help me please

Do as it asks, insert blank CD-Audio or CD-Music media.

Discs for recording
For recording, make sure to use special audio discs only.
These discs are marked with “Digital Audio” and the logos shown below.
There are two different types of audio discs for the use on this CD recorder:
– CD-Audio Recordable (CDR) discs
These discs can be recorded on once and
play in all standard CD players and CD
recorders, when they are finalized.
– CD-Audio ReWritable (CDRW) discs
These discs can be recorded on, erased and
re-recorded many times and play in CDRW
compatible CD players and CD recorders,
when they are finalized.
– All Philips CD players and CD recorders
with the sticker shown here are CDRW
compatible.
To ensure proper working of the set we recommend the use of Philips audio CDR and audio CDRW discs only.
Note: Do not use a computer CDR or CDRW as recording will not work!

Go here and download the manual. You'll need it.

You are probably inserting blank computer discs, eg 650 or 700mb rather than blank music CD-R or CD RW`s which this machine is designed to work with. The correct discs are labelled "music audio" or 80 minutes. You can only use these types of discs. Why? When these recorders first came out, it was a way of battling piracey in copying discs. I believe there is a "hack" to enable this player to use blank computer discs.

I want to use the optical input s a dac without going through the recorder

Put in a blank or unfinalized disc, press Record until Record Manual shows. This is similar to an old-school cassette deck being in Pause/Record mode. That should do it. The input signal will be present on the audio outputs (both digital and analog).

The manual isn't specific about how long you can remain in Record Manual mode without starting to record on the CD. My Pioneer has a Monitor function so I don't need to place a blank disc for this.
