Try first removing batteries and replacing with fresh ones, this will reset to factory settings.

Go also to setup menu and do a reset all.

Ensure that you do not have nightime/no flash settings on , try changing settings.

Try setting the camera to higher ISO so that you can use a faster shutter speed and/or smaller aperture.

Screen goes white when plugged in

How white? Stark blinding white? Or just too bright? The latter is normal. Just manually adjust the brightness when you plug it in using the 'fn' key and the icon that looks like 'decrease brightness' (usually a smaller sun or a sun with a down arrow).

My photos are far too bright and look almost white. I have tried adjusting the brightness, but it does not make a difference.

Turn down the ISO setting and lower the "exposure compensation" setting until you get satisfactory pics.

How do I take pictures in black and white with my nikon coolpix s220?

Press the Auto button (camera icon). Press the MENU button to bring up the shooting menu. Select "Color Options" then select "Black-and-White".

Unless you're just snapshooting, I recommend shooting in color and then converting to black-and-white using photo-editing software on a computer. You get much better control over contrast, brightness, etc. than what the camera gives you.

When I use the flash the front of the picture is very bright and the background is very dark.

That's normal. It's called the inverse-square law. When using a camera-mounted flash, you have to decide what you want to expose for.
