Question about Canon Speedlite 430EX TTL Flash

Canon 430EX Flash

I purchased this used flash without a manual for my son who lives in another state.  I don't have a camera to try it on, I'm a Nikon user so I'm not familiar with Canon equipment.  The ready light comes on and it test fires.  My question is, does the flash have to be mounted on a camera in order to see if all of the functions work.  The zoom setting is at 14mm, and nothing happens when I push the zoom button, also nothing changes when I push the + or - buttons.  Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Canon 430EX Flash

I have a 430ex and S5, I don't think the zoom head will move without being mounted on a camera.

If the flash test fires ok, then it should be fine.

When I take a promaster remote flash trigger system with my canon 430ex half of the picture is exposed. What am I doing wrong?

this is most likely a sync issue. you shutter speed is too high. try lowering it. 1/200 or 1/160 of a second should be fine for your case.

No wireless on my 430ex flash

This Canon flash gun does not have a true wireless (radio) trigger. It uses optical light pulse.

Thank you for using FixYa for your problem

Sounds like the flash tube has gone.

It should be taken to an authorized repair centre for a repair estimate.

Trigger a Speedlite 430EX II with a studio flash

  1. Make sure the trigger you are using is compatible with digital flashes.
  2. isolate the smaller contact so they do not "short out" on the trigger.
  3. make sure the trigger is working and will fire other flashes

Canon Speedlite 430EX zoom issue

You're gonna kick yourself, but here goes, you know that clear plastic wide beam shield on the front, make sure it's fully inserted or else the auto zoom won't work while it's in use, (or the flash thinks it's in use)

Make sure it is not set to manual 'M' on the display. To get it to shoot in ETTL (Through the lens) press the mode button and it should read ETTL in the top left corner. This then means that the light is metered thorugh the lens and you are not relying on the manual settings.

Hope that helps. I had the same problem when i first got my.
By the way a brilliant all round bit of kit. I have traveled the world to some fairly extreme temps and got it wet (Rain, humidity, sea spray to deserts and serious dust) All good.

Good luck
