Has the starter gear been replaced If so check the amount of teeth are right for your flywheel if not is it worn down or broken teeth, If you didnt jump start your mower with a car then your starter is most likely ok,check your connections are clean ground. Last thing is that these engines have a compression release inside engine so starter is able to turn engine over hardly ever goes bad.

Won't start

You may try to go directly from the battery to the starter, with jumper cables. Hook up the cables to the battery, then hook the positive to the battery, then touch the negative to frame or engine block. If the starter spins the problem is mst likely your starter relay. Hence the single click. While you are at it check the ground connection from battery to frame or engine block. Good Luck, Wayne

My MTD yard machine 115 072A019 starts fine then when I start to mow it squeals loudly then dies. When I look at it the start pully is jammed. I get it moving freely and the same thing happens.

hi there wendic

pauly46 here

your machine sounds like it needs the starter clutch on top of the flywheel replaced

it is quite possbile that you will need another stater pulley and spring too as the faulty starter clutch would be causing damage to those components too , if your really lucky they wont be damaged but more often they are

so your worst case scenario is replace starter clutch, pulley and spring , the least is replace only the starter clutch and check for damaged csping and pulley where it engages the clutch

as well the shaft where the clutch attaches to

here is web site for parts
go to mtd , then lawn tractor , then select model from list

115-072a019 hopefuuly it in the list

if not let me know your engine model and type code and brand and i will try get part numbers for you

cheers pauly46

I am betting you will not believe this, but, your battery is bad. I just had the same problem last month. Same, same. I have always had good luck with jumper cables, but there was something wrong with the mower battery. When I removed it and replaced with new one, everything is as new.

NaMy doors are electronically operated with a remote control, but my battery is dead and i can't get in to pop the hood open, what can i do to pop the hood open through the out side?

You can jump the car without opening the hood.Jack the vehicle up on the starter motor side.get a jumper battery and jumper cables.with the jumper cables connect the positive terminal of the jumper battery to the positive feed (thats the cable that comes from your vehicles battery) on the stater motor. using the negative jumper cable side, earth the jumper battery on the gearbox or starter housing, preferebly. You can now unlock your car with the remote

Mower will not start, battery cgarged up but onlhy

Check all the wiring connections on the starting system. Start at the battery. Both posts. Then, check where the ground goes to the body of the tractor. Make sure it's not rusty and making a good connection. Check the wire from the battery to the solenoid. If worse comes to worse, you can take a jumper cable and go from the battery + side and jump right to the starter post where an electrical cable connects. This will let the engine turn over, but make sure you have the mower in neutral and brakes set, with blades OFF!

Either you are holding the key in the ON postion too long, or the starter has shorted out, remove starter for repair.

Does the negine turn freely or with alot more effort than before. If the latter then engine may be damaged. Need to check compression and try to turn over by hand without spark plug in.If you cannot turn over by hand, engine damaged.

12.5 hp mtd starter turns slowlllllly

brush's inside the starter are bad the brush's made poor contact with the armature inside the startermotor and are not getting full contact causing the armture to get hot causing the starter not to spin at rated speed to start motor you have 2 things you can do (1) take the motor off the lawn mower unit and have it rebuilt or buy a new unit and still have the old one rebuilt so you have a spair have them test it in front of you take and place it in a dry plastic bag so you have it ready for the next time it fails
