Maytag MMV4205BA microwave buzz/grind when operating then no power

I have a Maytag MMV4205BA microwave. Today when I was trying to cook some oatmeal, I pressed start on the control panel and stepped away for a second. Next thing I hear is a buzzing/grinding noise and then the microwave just died. This had happened a couple of days before and we readjusted the turntable glass and that seemed to solve it. The outlet works and the breaker wasn't blown. My husband has the microwave open now and we do have a blown fuse -- but no idea what caused it. Help!

I had the same sound and a friend whi is an installer replaced the fuse and heard the sound also and the oven stopped. He said it was the magnI atron, which is covered under a 5 year warranty. I contacted Maytag and the repair shop that they use said over the phine it may be something elsa and when he came out said it was the transformer. He did not replace the fuse and try to operate it. They charged a fee and gave an estimate that was more than the oven is worth. I'm feeling taken advantage of, Could the problem be the transformer?

I have had the same problem is the past, however, the most recent incident resulted in a total failure complete with an electrical burn smell. My applicance has only been in use for 1 year 8 months. I had it installed professionally on a dedicated electrical circuit and needless to say, I am disheartened to see other complaints of a similar nature! Will I buy a Maytag product again? Double It!

You may have some arching inside where your magnatron is located. If you open the door on the right middle part there is a silverplate on the wall .If it is burned you may need to replace magnatron.if you do not seee burn marks it may still be the magnatron hope.that would be the only possible thing that would make the noise other then the mtor plate out of place.

Hi. Our 1 1/2 year old Sharp KB6524PS Microwave Drawer: While cooking oatmeal, at start of cycle, the microwave started arcing, then smoking. Shut off at 15 seconds. Microwave-safe china used.

I expect the arcing came from the waveguide cover or aerial cover having either a crack or carbonised food particles on it.
A new cover may affect a cure if the magnetron is not damaged.

How do I cook oatmeal in my goldstar microwave?

Heat water to boiling, instead of heating the oatmeal for instant oatmeal. Add heated water to panel and cover bowl to maximize steam effect.

It may be a shorting high voltage capacitor, but may also be a bad magnetron or high voltage transformer.

The microwave wont respond to the timer. It keeps cooking unless you open the door. After the timer runs out it seems like it cuts off but there is still a low buzzing sound and it is still cooking. Have...

low buzzing can be a power relay or a (solid-state)
triac which both supply power in their own right to the power transformer to operate the magnetron tube, even though you say it quits cooking when you open the door,i would still check the micro-switches in the door for proper alignment and operation, because it can be a door switch mis-alignment or a leaking triac still supplying power to the unit

Kenmore 721.80524500 makes a buzzing, grinding noise

Your problem is due to the "magnetron" arcing to the wave guide within the microwave. Picture someone arc-welding stuff together inside the microwave casing, that's essentially what's happening. It is a fire hazard and you should stop using the microwave immediately. As far as I know, there isn't a recall on that particular model (though there was on another similar Kenmore/Whirlpool model) so if it's out of warranty, you're out of luck.

As promised, here is your solution information:

You can download Maytag owner's manuals, installation instructions, and parts lists here.

You can find the service manual (which may not have a parts list) by selecting Literature by Model on this page and entering your exact model number with suffix. (Also try it without suffix if you have trouble).

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

You need all three of those documents in some cases.

Finally, you can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

At our site, we now have a video available showing how to remove a typical control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Microwave makes loud buzzing sound when on and no heat

Have you tried putting a cup of water in it and cooking on a low power level? If it buzzes only when it is on the cook cycle, that would narrow it down. More detals might help us help you, including the model number.
