The users manual for these pool heaters has a very detailed troubleshooting guide. It has you check things on your heater that you need to be looking at to answer. Try using this guide. It will probably give you the most acurate and comprehensive answer.

I had the same problem. My heater would read between 123 and 126. The heater sat all winter and a corrosion built up around the three sensors in the manifold; I guess I didn't drain it well enough. I pulled out all three and found that rust/sediment whatever had partially plugged two of the three and completely plugged the temp and/or ags sensor. I cleaned all orfices out carefully with increasing sized drill bits and re-installed the three sensors. It still didn't work so I purchased a new thermistor (the one with the built-in probe) installed it and the temperature immediately returned to 64 deg. The heater works fine now. MacGuiver of ECC

SOURCE: Water Temp on heater reads 126 degrees F

I am not sure if you have resolved this issue, or not, but just in case. Yes, the problem is the Thermistor. This is a sensor that "reads" the incoming water temp. It is really easy to replace as well.

SOURCE: Water Temprature read 126 on heater and will not Fire

This is a problem with your thermister (heat sensor) You will find this on the left side of the water manifold about half way down. I'm not sure but I think it is a small tube that slides into the manifold and if you follow the wires back to the board it just plugs in. The part is reasonable priced for a heater part and very easy to install. Good luck.

Sta Rite SR400NA heater is about 3 yrs old. started once this spring and ran for a couple hours to heat pool slightly. 3 months later and trying to start it up and it will not do anything. read out says...

This is a common problem and easy to fix. Your temp sensor screws into the front side of the water manifold. You will just get a new one and swap it out. Your book will show you just where it is, but it's the size of a 1/2" plug on the top front of the manifold when you take the cover off the heater. Good luck.

Temperature on the display is not the actual temperature. Heater will not come on

Without more info like what the temp reading is and what the actual temp is it is hard to say. The first thing that comes to mind is temp sensor has gone bad. This is located on the side of the water manifold and the wires run back to the control board. You can order one with a model number from your local pool store. These are very easy to replace I hope this does it.

The heater won't fire and water temp reads 114 degrees. I've replaced the thermistor with no luck.

If the temp reads 144, the heater will not fire because it thinks the water is 144 ... entirely too hot and way beyond the safety limit of this heater.

I believe your trouble is in the thermostat sending unit.

Let me know what happens when you check this sensor.

Sta-rite gas heater will not go on.

Part of the ignition system is bad. It is probably the ignitor, if you change it shut main gas supply to unit. Also, shut the power to the heater and turn it back on after repair

Heater turns on runs for short time display reads 120 or so but temp stays at 80 or so

It is probably your thermistor. It is screwed into the header (the place where the pipes come out). To know for sure you would have ohm it out (I am not sure of the ohms of this particular model). If it ohms out ok then it could be the control board.
