Question about Maytag Legacy Series Top Load Washer

1 Answer

Tangled, "knotted" cloths

I have Maytag, Legacy Series washer. The cloths started coming out all tangled up at the end of the cycle. (Other symptoms observed: 1. It seems like the the tub coasts to a stop for a longer period at the end of the cycle than it used to. 2. It also seems to have a fairly mild squeek associated while coasting to a stop.)

Hi, these are early signs of drive failure. the drive is made up of a clutch assembly and a transmission(gearbox). it also has a brake that is integrated into the drive as well. these components work together and if one or more start to malfunction, it will cause squeaking noises and slow reacting braking of the drum as well.

You will have to replace the drive and transmission soon.

Why are my business shirts on a gentle cycle or any wash cycle so badly tangled togther?

Hi Stella,

I suspect the tangled shirts coming out of the washer is a result of the differences between the way a front loader vs a top loader clean clothes and can not be avoided. I don't think this is the source of the wrinkles though. I suspect the wrinkles are more a result of how long clothes remain in the dryer *after* the cycle has completed. If you remove the clothes *promptly* from the dryer and use a "dryer sheet" you will reduce / minimize the wrinkling you're seeing.

My washer tangles up my clothes. I swear someone goes downstairs and ties the clothes up. They are always a tangled mess thats hard to pull apart when they are wet! Help!!!

Make sure you are not over filling the washer, when my mother in-law does the laundry, it ends in a tangled mess. However when I wash them, no problem I shake the clothes out before I put them in and I try not to overload the washer.

My machine seems to skip the spin cycle.we have replaced the dial and its still not working.

What you have is a worn thrust bearing, a common failure on these machines. When the motor reverses for spin, the cam actuator on the main drive pulley release the brake which is holding the tub still for agitation. If the tub was allowed to move freely during the wash cycle the clothes would end up knotted, tangled, and not too nice. Whilst the motor is turning in the direction of agitate the water remains in the washer. For spin, the motor comes to a screeching halt, and starts in the opposite direction, this makes the pump discharge the water and the tub begin to spin, that is IF the brake gets released. I found the most marvelous repair pictorial on replacing one of these HERE

I have a Whirlpool Duet and my clothes are tangled up and in knots. What can I do

Put them into a pillow case with a zipped cover before they go into the main wash tub

They will still come out clean with less tangles

Clothes come out tangled

Things tend to intertwine in the washer, even more so in front loaders. The only things that I have found that help is to use fabric softener, a gentler cycle, and an extra rinse. This alleviates the problem some for me, but it doesn't really go away entirely.

My cloths don't come clean.....whites are dingy even with bleach. Normal stains on regular colors don't come out. If you put more than one pair of pants or two long sleeved shirts in a load they come out...

First I would start by cleaning your washer system with vinegar. Ran your machine like you would without clothes and pour a cup of vinegar like you would with the soap for a whole cycle. If this doesn't work chances are your drain is clog or your pump isn't working properly.

Tangled clothes

For low water volume - or "Trickling" effect...

1. Turn off the water supply to both hoses.
2. Remove hoses (one at a time so you don't get them confused)
3. On the washer side - look for a removeable screen inside where you just removed the hose.
4. Using a small screwdriver - pop out the screen and reverse-flush it/clean it. It will likely be full of sediment and calcium deposits from your pipes.
5. Replace the inlet screens.
6. Re-fit the hose to the machine.
7. Turn on water supply valves.
8. re-try.

Clothes are still too wet at the end of wash and rinse cycle

Did anyone check the outlet tube to make sure it is clear of any debris and not tangled? I had this problem on another washer and it ended up being a crimped hose.
