Rubber strip on sole plate?

I recently cleaned my Dyson, and noticed the long skinny strip of rubber that outlines the soleplate was hard and crispy, so I peeled it off... Bad decision? Cut off all the string/hair on the brush, etc and now I have hardly any suction on carpet and bare floors are so-so as well. The brush bar spins as normal and I've checked for clogs. Would that rubber strip affect the suction that much, and how do I replace it? I haven't been able to find that part online. Thank you for any help!

Hello,

There could be a few things that would cause your Dyson to have no suction. I will give you detailed step by step instructions along with pictures on how you can diagnose this.

Possible Problem #1. The first problem is extremely common. In fact, we probably see between 2-3 of these problems every week. It mostly happens after people take the bottom plate off the vacuum in order to cleanrubber strip on sole plate? - icon1.png the roller brush. What happens is when they reinstall the bottom plate, they put it on on incorrectly. It's actually very easy to do. When the bottom plate (soleplate) is installed wrong, there will be a gap between the bottom plate, and the agitator housing, or the purple tray the roller brush sits in. This will cause the soleplate to be a few inches higher off the ground then it should be, preventing the brushes from even hitting the carpet. This makes it seem to the user that vacuum has lost suction power because without the brushes hitting the carpet, the machine will not pick up very well on floors, but when they use the attachment hose there's plenty of suction power.

Here's a picture of the WRONG way to install the bottom plate. Notice the gap in between the two housings:

Here's another picture, that is the RIGHT way to install the soleplaterubber strip on sole plate? - 8b953d0.jpg

I would say probably 6 times out of 10 this is the problem with the customers machine. If you checked the soleplate and it is installed correctly, move on to the second possible problem.

Possible Problem # 2. Turn the vacuum cleaner upside down so the brush roller is facing upwards. I found the easiest way to work on it is to put it on a counter top or work bench. On the left hand side behind the roller brush you should see a flexible transparent hose that goes from the motor to the agitator housing. This hose actually has a lot of strain on it when the vacuum cleaner is in the reclined position. When the first few series of Dyson DC07 models came out, they didn't make this hose long enough, so when the vacuum was in the reclined position, it would put too much stress on the hose, and cause the hose to actually crack, usually right where the end of the hose that goes into the agitator housing. Examine your hose and see if you have any visible cracks in this hose. If you need to you may just remove the entire hose assembly by pulling on it. It will easily come right out of the machine so you can inspect it better. Here's a picture of rubber strip on sole plate? - 54cb5e5.jpgose usually cracks:

54cb5e5.jpg
This would also explain why the vacuum works fine when using the attachments, but not on the floors. The attachment hose uses a different suction channel, and when the machine is in the upright position, no suction goes through this hose. If you do find a crack in this hose, the this hose needs to be replaced. Here's a direct link to that hose on our GoVacuum website.

Possible Problem #3. I would suspect that this may not be the problem, but if neither of the solutions above worked, then try this one. Dyson's in general are prone to clogging. There are a few clog ports throughout the vacuum cleaner that were added there due to Dyson prototypes becoming clogged at these points. Here are pictures of how and where to check for these clogs. be63721.jpg

Possible Problem #4. If none of the above solutions worked for you, try this last one. The Dyson DC07 models use a clutch mechanism that stops the roller brush from spinning when changed from carpet mode to bare floor mode. This clutch mechanism is a notorious problem with all Dyson models, in fact they were such a problem that Dyson had to redesign the DC07 model to a non-clutch system. Even if yours is one of the newer ones that don't use a clutch, yours still has a belt inside. You can tell if your model uses a clutch or not by the shape of the roller brush. If your brush is a perfect cylinder shape, yours does NOT have a clutch. To check and see if the clutch or the belt have gone bad, first release the handle on the vacuum as if you were vacuuming carpets. Make sure the machine is set to carpet mode. Now while the handle has been released, turn the machine upside down and see if the brushes are spinning. If the brushes are spinning then turn the vacuum right side up and put the brushes on the floor. Can you still hear the brushes spinning when they are hitting the carpet? If yes, then this is not the problem. If the brushes however are NOT spinning, this indicates either your brush roll, clutch, or belt have gone bad.

Flicker strip m8.
What you removed was the flicker strip.
It sets lower than the bottom plate.
It helps create the seal between be the body and floor.
Directing the suction to the floor instead of dispersing the suction throughout the whole bottom.
They are currently sold out EVERYWHERE or I would be provide a copy link.

SOURCE: DC 07 BRUSH BAR DOES NOT TURN BELT OK

Stand vacuum up and with it plugged in. Rotate knob between carpet and bare floor and back 5 times leaving it on carpet when finished. Rotate vacuum back from upright position and lay vacuum on the floor, rotating it onto its side. Turn vacuum on.

Is the machine not turning on? There may be a push button circuit breaker on this machine but I doubt it. I have no personel experience with this specific device. Are you sure you have power going to the sweeper? All guards, filters and shields are in their proper place?

That is an indication that the belts are worn, stretched or broken. You simply need to replace the belt. Here is a link to the belt(s) you need and a manual you can view:

SOURCE: Dyson upright, no suction at bottom in carpet or

Hi its Darran at Dyson.

It sounds as though the machine is blocked. with the machine switched off, check the base of the machnie by removing the soleplate and clearing any obstructions. With the soleplate removed, you will be able to check the internal hose and clear any threads or hair trapped around the brush bar.

If you would like a step by step guide, visit the Support section on our website at www.dyson.com.

I hope that you find this information useful.

Kind regards

If you've had the brush out to clean it you need to re-set the trip switch which is a red button at the right side of the brush simply press it in till it clicks.

My older dyson is so hard to push, was told there's a kluge to fix it. Where can I find that information?

You will be surprised how much friction dirt on the sole plate will cause, it has to be as clean as possible to glide across the carpet so definitely clean that before you move onto any other solutions, or it's damaged or simply a worn soleplate.
hope this helps.

My dyson will not pick up but has suction when using hose only

I have had Dyson All Floors model,( the one with the clutch adjustment to allow transition from carpet to hard floor) for a number of years. Recently pick up from carpet particularly poor. Went through all the solutions as recommended on Dyson website. No blockages, no broken sole plate, bristles (should be around 7mm to 8mm long) protruding ok from soleplate ( these can wear slightly over time but not usually the problem), belt not broken nor slipping. Filters cleaned/ replaced, but still poor pickup. Checking for strength of suction, as recommended by Dyson, both at top of hose and at bottom right inlet revealed no problem there. It turned out the clear inlet hose coming from the soleplate to the underside of the machine was the problem from two viewpoints. Firstly, as can be expected, the clear hose can develop splits after a number of years due to wear and tear. The other, not so obvious, problem is that the hose is also a form of straight spring which is designed to be compressed to a certain degree to an S shape when the machine is in the upright position. Upon pulling the handle back, whilst pushing on the footrest at the bottom results in pressure from the hose/spring being applied to the rear of the sole plate, pushing it on to the carpet. Thereafter the suction takes over, keeping the soleplate firmly fixed to the carpet. The existing hose on my machine had settled in to an S shape over the several years I have had the machine, thereby not pushing firmly enough the rear of the soleplate on to the carpet ( I noticed a significant gap at the rear whilst using the machine). For the couple of splits I had effected a temporary repair using a couple of very narrow strips of Gaffa tape, whilst awaiting the new hose/spring, but only a marginal' if any, improvement. Upon receiving and attaching the new hose/spring the solepate was properly pressed onto the surface of the carpet and pickup was like new.

Dyson 14 extremely hard to push, what would happen if i used it without the sole plate

Hi there,

Sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC14 All Floors. We'd strongly recommend against attempting to use the cleaner without the soleplate in place. It may be worth checking with the carpet manufacturer, because certain types of carpet aren't suitable for cleaning with an upright vacuum cleaner.

If you have any further questions or concerns about your cleaner, please get in touch with us directly. One of our experts will be happy to provide the information and assistance you need. You can call us free on 08002980298 - our Helpline is open from 7am until 10pm, 7 days a week.

On the sole plate you should have 5 little wheels, these are prone to jamming after a while. You should make sure these are not jammed in anyway.

You can release these with a screwdriver, but be careful not to prize too hard as you may damage the sole plate.

Take all the wee wheels out and spray them and the sole plate with wd40 and then replace.

HOW TO REMOVE SOLEPLATE PLEASE TO CLEAN cleaner dyson dc07

On the underside of your Dyson, there are 3 coloured fasteners with slots in the heads which secure the sole plater. Turn each one 90 degrees with a coin or large flat-bladed screwdriver and then lift the edge of the sole plate where the fasteners were located. It can then be removed. If your Dyson is yellow/grey, the fasteners will be yellow. If it is purple/grey, the fasteners will be purple, etc.

The bottom part is not turning and it's loosing suction.

Take the sole plate off and check for blockage and check and make sure the brush is turning freely I suspect the brush is clogged and the soleplate is obstructed. Check the hose for any obstructions as well.

I have a DCO7 dyson VAC it is not picking up any thing. It seems like it is working and sounds all right, I did clean the brushes .

Greetings,

I see this happen a lot on Dyson vacuum cleaners. A lot of the time when the user removes the bottom sole plate to clean the brushes, the sole plate is installed incorrectly when putting it back together. This causes the brushes of the vacuum not to hit the floor, and thus greatly reducing the cleaing ability of your Dyson on floors and carpets, but when you use the attachments you'll still have full suction power and great cleaning ability when you use the attachments.

Check the sole plate on your vacuum on the sides of the vacuum. Are the sides of the soleplate flush with the yellow (or purple for DC07 Animal models) agitator housing, or is there a visible crack in between these two plastic pieces?

If you see that crack, then simply remove the soleplate again by unscrewing the three colored plastic screws on the bottom, and re install, this time making sure that the two housing are completely flush with each other.

If this didn't fix your problem, I'd love to try and help you further diagnosis this issue. Please just use the Clarification Request that you see here on this page, and let me know a little more specifics about what's going on. I hope this helped you out. If it did help, please be sure to rate the repair solution helpful by clicking on the Thumbs Up Icons in this repair.

Thank you very much,

Chris J.
