Unheard of program and want to install windows XP

My wife bought home a new computer from her work the other day that her job had given her for free. This computer has a 2.54 processer and 512 MB of Ram, butĀ  the only problem is that it is running a system called Ubuntu. I have never heard of this program and after visiting a few sites, I found that it is a program used in africa. I want to take this program off the computer and install windows Xp instead. How do I do this?

The best bet is to borrow a copy from a neighbour/friend and use your CD key on the side of your laptop instead of his to register.

also get onto the police and report that repairman as he's charged you for a job he hasn't done and using illegal software.

Are certain restore disks interchangeable?

Unfortunately you cant use a vista restore disk for a XP operating system.

You could install vista on it and then use XP compatibility mode for whatever programs you want to run. Simply right click on the program and select the compatability tab..change to XP.

Can I move hard drive from 1 PC(xp home) to xp pro/vista

you should be able to install as many drives as your computer has seta ports. The problem i having is why did your old computer stop working, Or died? If it had anything to do with a virus i would not recommend retrieving this information without a serious anti-virus program. Also keep in mind that you will not be able to boot off the old C:\ drive but you should still be able to access all of its contents. Hope this answers any of your questions but am here for more advice if you need some.

Thanks for using fixya and please don't forget to rate your responses

I need to up grade my windows 2000 to windows xp

First you need to make sure that your computer meets the following specifications:
- 300 MHz (or higher processor)
- Intel Pentium/Celeron or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron compatible processor.
- 128 MB of RAM (or higher)
- 1.5 Gigabytes of available hard disk space
- Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher resolution video adapter and monitor.

I am sure that your computer likely meets all of these requirements, but I posted them to save you the grief if by chance it does not meet one of the above!

In a moment I will post a link to a website where you can purchase an upgrade to Microsoft Windows XP home edition (Service Pack 2).

Once you have the software, start up windows 2000 and place the disk into the CDROM drive. You should be given an option to upgrade to XP. (make sure you start the disk while you are on the Windows 2000 desktop with all programs closed). After XP is installed if your computer does not have an Antivirus program installed, I strongly recommend either installing Norton Antivirus or AVG. AVG is free and can be downloaded from Then make sure that your windows firewall is turned on. (It should be automatically) After this go to and download service pack 3 and any additional updates needed.

The upgrade version of Windows XP home with service pack 2 can be purchased from by clicking on this link:

I hope that this information has been helpful to you. Please let me know if you have any other questions!

On my new HP computer, Office Home and Student 2007 is factory installed for a 60-day trial. I bought Office Home and Student 2007 locally and have tried to install it, but do not think it will install as...

Go to Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs and look for the Office Trial. Click on "Remove", then try to install the new software.

(BTW, any other not wanted pre-installed software programs can be removed the same way.)
