Heater doesnt work sometimes

I have a whirlpool clothes dryer. Sometimes the heating unit goes on, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it does and shuts off during the cycle. Any ideas on the problem/solution?

If you can make sure all the wires are in place and not loose. I've had new appliances delivered and the wires were not snapped in place all the way.
make sure the appliance is unplugged when you work on it.

My dryer works fine...heats tumbles the timer just doesnt advance once it starts therefore the dryer wont turn off on its own

the cycling and the hi limit thermostats.
For continuity or OHMS. If no ohms or resistance they need replacement.

In some dryer's the control panel relies on a thermistor rather than a CYCLING thermostat to regulate the drum's air temperature by monitoring the component's resistance changes; resistance goes down as temperature increases and up when temperature decreases. Once the drum's air temperature reaches a certain level required to dry clothes, the control panel shuts off the heater. The panel will turn the heater on again and begin another heating cycle when the thermistor indicates that more heat is needed to keep the air temperature constant inside the drum

Lastly check your moister sensor. ( located inside the dryer door usually) Especially if machine seems to shut down early and clothes are still wet.
Test with a meter at room temperature and it should show continuity.
A failed moisture sensor will affect the dryer run time in the automatic moisture sensing cycle but it will not affect the heating of the dryer or the timed cycle. Which are reflected by the thermostats.

DOESNT HEAT AND I SMELL GAS

Hello - From what you are describing, if the dryer only heats up sometimes but provides a gas odor, it could possibly be a defective gas supply or igniter. Try resetting the unit by unplugging it or flipping the household circuit breaker off. Wait approximately ten minutes and turn on the fuse for the dryer. Turn on the dryer and select a normal cycle. If it proves to be ineffective and if the issue continues I suggest contacting a professional to move forward accurately. Keep in mind since it is such a complex unit, the technician will likely verify that it doesn't have a defective sensor, control board or high limit thermostat.

Whirlpool ggw9868kq .Ducts are clean, airflow is good. Drum rotates. Dryer warms up then heating stops. happens in both auto and timed cycles.

My whirlpool dryer Model GGW9896KQ2 seems to run ok but it doesn't seem to heat up properly and takes several cycles to dry clothes. I checked the exhaust vent and it seems to be blowing air out ok. Also, it appears the dryer goes to the cool down cycle way to early. In addition, the dryer will sometimes shut off before the time is acutally done. help--I don't want to spend money for a tech or even a new dryer. It's only 8 years old.

Dryer power problems

Yes, all dryers have a belt that turns the drum. Chances are the belt and heat problems are 2 separate issues.. The belt turns the drum from a motor mounted inside the unit, your electric dryer has a heater element/coils that heats the drum your clothes are in. The belt could be bad and heat element also but both at exactly the same time is rare. Try unplugging the unit for about 5minutes and see if it resets. My washer does that sometimes and I have to unplug
