Check to see you have the interference eliminator (aka tone code, PL, private line, CTCSS) programmed correctly to match the other units you are talking with.

I Want To Add Talk Back Mod To CB Radio

there is what is known as the Quick and Dirty way, to add talkback to almost any CB radio. You will need a 130 Ohm 1/4 watt resistor. Open the radio and find the two mounting points for the external speaker jack and PA audio jack, you will want to solder the resistor across from the Positive connection of the PA jack to the Ground connection for the External speaker jack. This will give you talkback, and eliminate any feedback when the microphone is held at a normal operating distance away, Just remember, (This could potentially damage your radio if done improperly, I will not be held liable for anything that you do to your radio.) However, when done correctly this is a perfectly safe modification, and will allow you to monitor your output audio, as it is being transmitted. You can adjust the size of the resistor to your liking, however, I do not recommend anything lower than 100 Ohm, as there will be more potetial for squealing/feedback.

Midland LXT410; one of the units makes a continuous noise when receiving if the volume is turned up louder than 3. It doesn't matter how close or far apart the two units are. We hadn't noticed...

It sounds like a damaged or dirty volume control. I have seen controls where the element inside the control snaps and this sounds like what has happened to your radio. You did not say if the squelch control was set open or closed. If what you are hearing is loud static, I would adjust the squelch control on the radio to see if it stops.

It is likely a fuse inside the radio that is open, or possibly some poor solder connections. I would call whoever you purchased them from and have them take a look.
