Reinstall OS My IBM ThinkPad T30 2366 notebook isn't running, it's walking. I've been advised to wipe the HD clean and reinstall the Windows XP OS. Is this something that needs more expertise than the ordinary computer user has? Is it something i can do myself?

Installing Windows is pretty straightforward, you just follow the prompts, but you must be sure that you know where your driver disk is. Drivers control the hardware on your computer, so without driver software, nothing works properly.
If your notebook is running slowly, there are better ways than a reinstall to speed it up. Perform some maintenance, open up 'My Computer', right click on your storage drive (usually C) and click 'properties'. Once inside click 'disk cleanup' to clean out any temporary files that might be bogging you down. From that same area, click the 'tools' tab at the top. Run 'error checking' and a 'defragmentation' to help speed things up a little more (of course, this could take a long time, especially the defragmentation)
Visit the IBM webside and make sure that you have the most recent drivers for your notebook, and also make sure that your system is fully up to date, and virus free.
Formatting and reinstalling the operating system should be a last resort, as this will cause you to lose everything saved on your computer.

It's cake...Just follow the instructions when you boot in xp install or your recovery partition. Be sure to set an administrator password during the install. If you don't anyone can access your machine. Other than that my 8yr old son does it for me all the time in my shop.

Have an IBM A31 Thinkpad. Purchased used. Have Windows/Systems32/Config/ System missing or corrupt message. I do not have the original System Set CD-ROM. I have no work on the computer that I need

The hardware specs for this machine will not handle anything later than Windows XP. I would recommend doing a clean installation of XP or even might try a free operating system like Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/). Just have to download the iso and get it burned to a disc. All in all, I would recommend a machine with better specs to provide an all around better working computer. Hope this helps.

I HAVE A IBM THINKPAD T42, IT HAS WINDOWS PRODUCT KEY AT THE BACK, I FORMATED IT AND I WANT TO REINSTALL THE OS BUT I DONT HAVE THE ORIGINAL CD AND ALSO I DONT KNOW WHICH SERVICE PACK WAS IT. CAN I USE ANY...

This T42 was probably installed with Windows XP. Pro. Look at the label it will state which version of XP and on the left hand side of the label you will see a version no. X08 or X10, You can use any Windows XP Pro CD that is the same version that is on the label ie. X08 or X10.
The latest Service pack for XP is SP3.

Hi! My IBM R52 Notebook has gotten pretty slow. What shall do to get it quicker again and how can I formate the notebook! thanks for your valuabl advise in advance, rp

Try cleaning up your unused programs and files using disk cleanup and defragment your drive using disk defragmenter.
To formaer your drive and reinstall the OS, run the computers recovery wizard, or insert the recovery disk that came with your computer.
If you do not ahve a recovery disk or recovery program, use a windows installation disk like windows vista, windows XP DVD to format and reinstall the OS.
Make sure to backup the stuff you want before attempting this!
