Door will not close without hands on help

1/3 hp liftmaster chain drive, can hear the sprocket racheting noise as the door trys to close but has to be pushed/helped by hand or will not move . Opens without a problem or noise. I took the cover off the bottom of the housing that holds the sprocket and don't see anything out of place or broken??? A little leery about taking anything apart so far. My thanks in advance of any advice.

This is the exact opposite of the normal complaint. Usually the door will close but needs help to open. Anyway when you had the cover off did you notice anything that looked like white sawdust? It really sounds like your drive gear is going bad. It is a white nylon gear and is just in front of the motor. Give it a good look.

Yes I agree. Sounds like the Helical gear. Plastic. Pretty easy and cheap fix. Find one on ebay for 8 bucks.

My Lift Master garage door will not close. It makes the closing noise but the door does not slide down. Whcan I talk to to fix this?

Sounds like you have a chain drive garage door opener and you hear a humming sound when you push the wall console. The motor is running but the chain does not move. You need to replace the gear & sprocket assembly.

I would take a close look at the sprocket/gear assembly. There is a bronze bushing that wears and lets that assembly lean. This can cause the chain to miss the teeth on the sprocket just a bit and will cause some weird noises. If it gets bad enough the chain will come off the sprocket. I have no idea why it would only do it in the down direction when there is much less strain on the whole thing. You might also remove the cover from the motor unit and check the drive gear. It is white nylon and wears out. It will be obvious if it is going bad.

I hate to say this but it sounds like your father did not follow the instructions when he installed the opener. Try following these instructions.

Loosen the chain enough so that you can remove it from the sprocket above the motor unit. With the door closed run the motor until the sprocket turns clockwise and stops. With everything attached replace and tighten the chain. Some adjusting of the up and down limits will probably be required.

How do I tighten sagging garage door chain?

I think you have more problems than just a sagging chain. It is most likely sagging because the bronze bushing at the gear and sprocket assembly is bad. It lets the sprocket lean forward and loosens the chain. You will also need to remove the cover from the motor unit and check the drive gear. It is a white gear just in front of the motor and is most likely stripped.

The shaft on these garage door motors are not direct drive systems. You'll have to open up the box to see what the actual problem is. I have had stuff like this happen where a gear just slipped out of place.

Here is a link for a parts supplier. I don't know your model but it looks like most of the Liftmaster worm screw gears and drive gears are plastic so it's possible that one of them has cracked.

Garage door opener closes when closed

Try this: Loosen the chain enough that you can remove it from the sprocket above the motor. Now run the opener until the sprocket turns in the clockwise direction and stops. Reconnect the chain. This will get everything in sync and you will have to tweak the 'up and down limits' a bit to get it just right.

Loosen and then remove the chain from the sprocket above the motor. Run the opener until the sprocket has turned in the counterclockwise and stopped. Now with the door in the open position replace the chain on the sprocket and tighten. This will get you close and minor adjustments to the up and down limits may be needed.

Craftsman 1/2HP Door Opener won't stay closed

Loosen the chain and run the opener until the sprocket runs in the counter clockwise direction and stops. Now with the door in the open position replace the chain. This will get everything back into sync but I hope you remembered where all those controls were. You need to put them back in their original positions.
