Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive
i bought my 500 gb Western Digital My Book last month and began backing up my music collection on it, as well as movies and pictures, etc. This was, luckily, right before my PC's hardrive crashed. However, now I cannot seem to retrieve much off of it. My PC recognizes it, and I can open it and see all of the files, but shortly after opening any particular file, it will suddenly freeze up, and one of two messages will come up. Either it says something like:
L:\my music\iTunes\Amelia's Themes is not accessible.
The Request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.
or it will say something about "sectors not accessible." I can sometimes get a few files off before it stops me, but often can not do even that. What should I do?
Just like we have a method for storage, like tupperwares and ziplock, so do harddrives. The tiny places on a drive that stores the info are called blocks and sectors. Sometimes certain application rewrites the data on a drive so you can go around bad sectors, but thats usually signs of a drive starting to fail. I would back up what you can, and cash in on the manufacterer's warranty if its still covered.
