Memory slot not working

One of the memory slots on my IBM Thinkpad T30 2366 is not working. As i understand, the solution is to replace the motherboard. Is there another solution? Is that job something i can do myself? I am not a computer hardware expert but I do have a tool collection, including small screw drivers. The most i have done internally is to replace the C-mos battery and a memory stick. Thanks for your response.

Thanks, Bootz84. I spoke with someone who assured me that, despite what IBM says, I can install a 1 Gb memory stick in the one working slot. So after I have reinstalled the OS that is what i plan to do. Hopefully the computer will work like lightening. But, just in case, do you think i can replace the motherboard myself?

Unfortunately, it would be difficult to detect 'why' your memory slot stopped responding. It could have been a short somewhere on the motherboard, which could be found by searching for a small discolored area (darkened) somewhere between the power inputs and the memory slot itself. If this is the case, fixing it yourself would be excrutiatingly difficult, because while you bypass the short, you could very well create another. The memory slot may just be filled with dust, thereby cancelling out one of the dozens of contact points. It could also be one of those contact points within the connection. In my opinion it would be far less time consuming for you to simply replace the motherboard, as the cause is likely unrepairable.

I believe so. Just make sure that you're very careful when disconnecting any wires, and keep notes about where and how the wires connect. Patience is the key, never rush your way through anything. If you get frustrated, take a break for an hour, and try again.

This is a known problem with Thinkpad T30's. There is a soldering defect in the front mem slot. It can be fixed without replacing the motherboard by re-soldering the broken solder point(s) but it takes a special soldering tool and a binocular microscope to find it. IBM fixed thousands out of warranty but has now stopped fixing them. Look for a repair shop that knows about this problem. Most likely it can be fixed for less than $75.

IBM T23 wont turn on after adding new RAM

Hi - according to memory suppliers your T23 has the following memory capacity / requirements:

  • IBM ThinkPad T23 maximum RAM capacity: 1GB
  • Your IBM has Two (2) memory slots or sockets
  • Module upgrade PIN count is: 144-PIN
  • The memory speed is: SDRAM 133MHz, PC133
  • The laptop DIMM type for the ThinkPad T23 is: SODIMM, SO-DIMM, Small Outline DIMM
  • Non ECC

If you are meeting these requirements, you may have a defective module.

Also, according to Lenovo's page on the machine:

Memory
The system has 128MB or 256MB of memory standard and can be configured for up to 1GB of addressable memory. Memory options up to 512MB SDRAM SO DIMMs each can be added in the two available slots for memory expansion. The standard 128MB of memory is expandable up to 640MB and the 256MB of memory is expandable up to 768 MB of addressable memory with 64, 128, 256, or 512MB SO DIMMs without removing the 128MB SO DIMM that is standard in one of the internal slots for memory. For customers that need the maximum 1GB to which memory can be expanded, it is necessary to replace the 128MB or 256MB card with a 512MB card plus add another 512MB card in the extra slot. Only 133MHz DIMM memory can be used in this system. The use of 100MHz DIMM memory is not supported in the T23 systems.

This means yo can trouble shoot the 512MB modules individually by installing one of the original 128MB modules and one of the new 512MB modules (for a total system memory of 640MB). If it does not boot, try again with the other 512MB module. This will help you identify a defective module that may be preventing the machine from booting.

I hope this helps & good luck!

My IBM thinkpad t30 beeps 8 times at me when i go to turn it on and will not start up what is that

Video memory error. The BIOS cannot write to the frame buffer memory on the video card. Since the frame buffer memory is on the video board's memory chips then you will have to replace the entire board.

I would like to nwom how much of memory this laptop support

The Thinkpad is installed with 128 MB SDRAM is standard, and is expandable to 512 MB
There are two memory slots, to expand it to 512 Mb you need two 256 Mb RAM modules and throw away the 128 Mb RAM module, but if you don't throw away this module and you insert a 256 Mb RAM module in the 2nd memory slot then your total memory would be 384 Mb.

Adding memory, new total not recognized: IBM Thinkpad R51e-1844

Ram should always be paired. Same type, speed and size in each slot. You may have 1 SIMM/DIMM/DDR that has 2 sides of chips and the other with 1 which will do exactly what you state. RAM reads across the chips simultaneously. So if you have a different one in each slot it can go bonkers and do goofy stuff on you.

IBM THINKPAD T30 memory slot problem

This problem can be fixed very easily. Find some one who knows how to solder and have them reflow slot #2. My T30 has run great for along time then all of a sudden I only had 1/2 my memory. I did what everyone should do in that situation I Googled it and it brought me here. I happen to be Service Tech for a cell phone company. I took my Laptop to work with me and reflowed the side mounts and every pin around the slot. It has worked flawless ever since.

Four things that could cause this. 1- power supply, check it for the proper output with an ohm meter, 2- bad battery, try starting with the supply only, 3- bad memory chip or slot, remove the memory, and try each chip one at a time in each slot, 4- failed power management system on the motherboard. Unfortunately, a failed power management system or chip is common with these, and the motherboard will have to be replaced in order to fix it.

IBM ThinkPad T40 2GB Max RAM

The T40 has two ram slots, you can put a 1g chip in each totaling 2g. If the chip will remove, then it is changeable. Vista needs a minimum of 256 to run, so, when you change BOTH chips to equal 2g it will probably read 1.744g, or it may read the full 2g. If it only reads 1g, then the second slot under keyboard may have malfunctioned. It could also be that the 256 chip is bad and your really only running 512 now. With all that said, in order to achieve 2g, you will need to put a 1g chip in each slot.

Hi,
It's your memory, or more to the point, the memory slots. take all memory out, install 1 piece in the slot closest to the back of the laptop, push down on the memory as if pushing it into the motherboard, and hold pressure while booting.
Bet that works. if not, let me know.
I've got the same machine.
Good luck
