Question about IBM ThinkPad T40 2373 Notebook
There is a one inch wide white patch on the screen. It is on the right side and begins at the bottom and goes about half way up the screen. I can move my mouse behind it. I can even click on the clock and bring up the pop up box to set the clock.
I presume it is the screen and not some left over box.
I have had a few old thinkpads (T21, 23) that had screen issues. I know that in these older models, there were issues with the LCD cable. Unfortunately, you have to take apart the LCD and play around with the flat cable that connects the MOBO to the LCD. In the cases I came across, I replaced mine with Ebay'd replacements. Its a bit of a gamble... In your case, it could be the connector may be coming loose. If you are the DIY type, I suggest you start by locating the connector that goes to the MOBO, disconnecting it, blowing it out, and firmly reconnecting. See if that fixes the issue.
Oh, I would assume that you did the obvious and rebooted etc etc.. to make sure it is a hardware issue...
