Question about Dell Latitude D520 Notebook
You can check to see if it is compatible with a linux distribution like Ubuntu. Ubuntu is the most like windows and is very user friendly plus it is completely free.
You can also try contacting technical support from Dell to see if they will send you a restore disk. You may have to pay shipping on this disk, but they may not offer them for that machine depending on how old it is.
Check the bottom of the machine and see if you can still read the license code from it. You may be able to reinstall from that with another disk, but this has proven to be iffy as there are many versions of disks out there with XP on them and they may not accept that particular code that is on the laptop.
If all else fails you can purchase a new XP license and use the drivers from Dells site to reinstall it on to the machine. OEM Licenses for laptops are particular to that machine.
Tiger direct still sells OEM install disks for XP.
