Question about Garmin zumo 550 GPS Receiver

Lines Running North and South

I load maps from my PC and sometimes I get these lines starting from the route up to the north.  It is not on the map in the PC but appears on the map on the Zumo 550.

Re: Lines Running North and South

How do you load maps? and are these Garmin maps. I try to keep the Zumo original and use an SD card for extra maps. Did you try this yet? And if you are using SD cards, try a different brand/quality. I had some lockups with crappy budget cards. Kingston, Sandisk and some other A brands work fine!

Only shows us routes not canada

I fell foul of that the other way. I have Canada maps and lent it to a friend who was going to California.

You need a map that covers Canada and it is an extra cost. The USA is in two zones, or one map does both zones.

You need to buy the Canada maps and then put it on an SD card. The map costs $84

Garmin 1450 won't pick up states in gps

Make sure you didn't just install a portion of the maps. try re-Loading the maps from the Garmin Express program, then check the map info screen by pressing Tools>Settings>Map> Map Info
it should say something like CN North America NT 2015.10, then all, or lower 49 or lower 49 NE (north east) etc

After we updated nuvi 50 it does not recognize south and North Carolina,Florida,Alabama or Georgia why?

Most likely because the newest maps are too large to fit on your device now. If you go to settings maps then my maps it will probably say lower 49 NW (north west) or NE (North East). Just buy a 4 or 8gb micro SD Memory card, stick it in the unit and run the update again but tell the program to change the coverage.

My gps is set on peru and i am in the us, the gps can not find the maps of us. thx ziv

You'll have to load the North American maps into the unit. Go to and register your unit with the site. You will then be able to purchase the north american maps and download to your unit using the Garmin updater on the site. The maps are all serialized to work with each unit ID, so a North American map on another user's Garmin will not work on yours (it is Garmin's proprietary copy protection system).

I have recently purchased nüMaps

Since you have (2) maps, North America and Europe, you will have (2) map files on the directory. They are:

gmapprom.img (North America map)
gmapprom1.img (Europe map)

Do you see both of these file names? Do you have unlock files associated with them such as:

gmapprom.unl (North America map unlock code)
gmapprom1.unl (Europe map unlock code)

These files should be 1 gigabyte or more in file size. If they are not, then they are possibly corrupted.

Was going north and the map said i was going south

Are you sure you were heading north at that particular time?
Gps show your direction at that moment and time. Just because your road is going north does not mean that the road is always going north, sometimes they change directions to go around obstacles that were in the way of the road design, IE mountain, town, river.
The sign for the highway may say your are heading north when in actuality you are heading south to go around something.

The gps will not take into consideration the curve of the road, it just tells you the direction you are heading. Hope this helps.

MY GARMIN NUVI 760 says north on a road when it should show south

Sounds like the map needs an update if it doesn't show roads that actually exist.

I can send you a powerpoint presentation that explains it in a little more detail. To really learn how to read latitude and longitude you should pick up a copy of “Chapman’s Piloting and Seamanship.”

The earth is divided into parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude, also known as lines of position.

Latitude is measured north and south of the equator, with the equator represented as 0 degrees, and the poles being represented as 90 degrees North or South. Latitude lines are paralel to the equator. For example, if I was at the equator I would be at 0 degrees. If I traveled exactly 60 nautical miles to the north, I would be at 1 degree North, and if I traveled another 60 miles I would be at 2 degrees north. Your GPS display will preface the Latitude measurement with an “N” for positions North of the equator and an “S” for positions south of the equator.

Longitude measures your position east or west from the Prime Meridian, which is a line represented as 0 degrees that bisects the earth from north to south and passes through Greenwich England. Halfway around the earth at the International Dateline Longitude is 180 degrees. Measuring Longitude is a little more complicated because the lines are not parallel and requires an accurate clock (your GPS) to compare time at your location relative to the time in Greenwich England. Your GPS display will preface the Longitude measurement with a “W” for positions west of Greenwich and an “E” for positions east of Greenwich.

To make more accurate measurements each degree is divided into 60 minutes. Because the lines are parallel, 1 minute of latitude is equal to 1 nautical mile. Each minute can be further divided into 60 seconds. Each second is roughly equivalent to a distance of 100’ Instead of seconds, the default setting on your Garmin breaks the minute down into tenths, hundredths, and thousandths for meven more precise measurements. Because they are not parallel, lines of Longitude are measured the same way, but the distances vary depending on how far north or south of the equator.

To find out where you are with a GPS, you need a map that shows lines of latitude and longitude on it. The lines will be labeled on the map or along the borders of the map. Most nautical charts show the latitude measurements along the right the left border of the map. Longitude measuremnts will be shown along the top and bottom edges.
