Every thing in a computer is replaceable if you can find a replacement. It could be a software or hardware problem, its most likely fixable. What does it do when you try to turn it on? Does anything appear in the screen are there any beeps etc.?

HP laptops are well known for motherboard issues, and will usually involve a replacement board, at this point have it checked before a decision is made.

Laptop Won't switch on

Computer does not boot upThe problem maybe the RAM, it is faulty or just needsreseating to make proper electrical contact.
Reseat the RAM and then boot up your laptop. If it still does not boot up thenremove the RAM module/s and take them to your friendly computer repair shop andget them to test the RAM for you.

Video clips that used to playback on my computer now won't. It shows a CALENDAR instead. ??? Doesn't happen on all of them...just the ones I MOST NEED, of course!

If the videos are stored on your computer, try disconnecting from the Internet, then rebooting with no Internet connection, then try playing them. It sounds to me like "big brother" trying to stop you from playing certain videos!

Won't boot from dvd or hard drive, changed hard drives and still won't boot

Depends on what you mean by won't boot from DVD or Hard Drive,
it sounds like your boot order is what you're looking for help for.

To do this you need to get into your computers BIOS (or "Setup")
You can do this by rebooting the computer and the very very very first screen you see tells you how,
usually by pressing DEL or F2 or F10.

Without knowing the specific computer you're looking for help on I can only point you in the right direction however keep in mind the BIOS is for advanced users only and you can damage your computer by randomly changing settings.

What you're looking for though is usually called the Boot Order or Boot Sequence
You'll need to set whatever device you want to boot from higher on the list (usually with the up arrow or PgUp)
If you don't see your device on the boot list then it may not be detected due to failure.

The screen vibrates occasionally--just a wiggle--and I think it's about to go kaput. Anything I can do if/when that happens? I thought these old monitors had to be thrown out when they stop working, but...

Anything is fixable for a price. Even though you don't want to here this, the price of repair exceeds the cost of replacement with a newer technology.

Computer not starting up properly... now it's not starting up at all!

I'm pretty sure your right about it being near hopeless because it sounds like your hard drive is physically failing but you could try and recover some of the stuff you need onto a flash drive if you can get it to start up even for just a few minutes. Otherwise you can just take it to someplace like the geek squad where it'll cost you but if it's possible they'll be able to get your stuff off.

Sorry and best of luck
