Hi, if this is a whirlpool model machine, you can't just remove the top. The whole cabinet needs to be removed. You can change the lid switch without removing the cabinet. Remove the two screws holding the lid switch. Pull the lid switch toward the middle of the opening and snip the wires. You can splice the new switch onto the old wires using wires nut connectors if you want. If you want to use the whole wire harnes that comes with new switch, remove the two screws that hold the control panel to the cabinet. now yuou can see the lid switch connection (easy plug in) located in the middle. Unplug the lid switch and force the connection downward. Remove the old switch and install the new.

I can get you part# or send you the part off my web site www.whirlpoolpartssurplus.com if you would like. I would need the model#

I hope this helps.

THanks
Vic

Washer fills and does the wash cycle then stops. doesnt rinse or spin

Most likely your lid switch is broken on the washer. I(t acts as a safety mechanism to stop the tub during spin should you open the lid.)
The switch is located under the top of the washer on the right side of the lid opening. It is activated by a plastic strike on the same side of the lid.

Will not spin in the spin cycle

This is a typical problem. If the machine fills up and stops and makes absolutely no noise whatsoever, what you have here is a broken lid switch. The machine simply thinks the lid is open, and therefore does nothing. Naturally after cracking a machine open you may find uncommon things such as broken and/or burnt wires, but these are unpredictable and highly unlikely.

If the washing machine is making noise but just not spinning we may have other problems. The other problems may be a slipping break clutch assembly or a transmission. Those are the two most likely candidates other than the lid switch. Get me a model number and I can look up a diagram of your washer and give you more tips if it's not a lid switch.

The symptoms you describe are typical of a broken lid switch. The lid switch is located under the washer top on the right hand side. It is activated through a slot by a small plastic piece on the lid called a "lid strike". Make sure the lid strike is still installed and not broken. Make sure the lid switch itself is not loose, as well. There are two mounting screws along the washer tub opening that hold it in place. If the screws become loose the switch will not make contact with the lid strike when the lid is closed. If you need to replace the switch or lid strike, the parts are available at searspartsdirect.com. Just type in your model number and look under the "Washer Top and Lid" heading on the next page. The lid switch is listed as item number 22 (part #3355806) and the lid strike is listed as item number 16 (part #358684). Both parts combined will cost you about $30. If you have further questions and/or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

If the washer fills and stops at the rinse cycle, and then will not spin or drain, you more than likely have a defective lid switch. If you open and close the washer lid and do not hear a “clicking” sound, the switch has probably come loose, or has broken. There are two mounting screws that hold the switch in place along the washer rim. Also, inspect the lid to ensure the small plastic piece that pushes down on the switch when the lid is closed has not broken off. This is called the “lid strike”. If the lid strike is broken or missing, the lid switch will not activate. If you diagnose the problem and need to replace the switch, you can click on the following link for advice on how to replace it:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r397101-replacing_lid_switch

If you need further assistance, such as where to get replacements parts, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

NOTE: You do not need to drain the wash tub to replace the switch. Once the switch has been replaced, the washer should spin and drain, which will prevent you from needing to bail water.
