Brother HL-2040 Printing With Strange Gray Marks on Back of Paper
About a week ago, my toner light lit up on my Brother HL-2040. I replaced the toner yesterday with a brand new one, and I followed the supplied instructions exactly as I did it, but when I closed the printer and tried printing something, the page was printed, but the entire sheet was smudged dark gray with toner, front and back. I did not know what could be causing this, because it's the first time I've replaced the toner since purchasing the printer, so I pulled the toner and drum out again and tilted the toner back and forth some more, thinking that perhaps the toner wasn't spread properly or something, but it still did not work properly. After that, I took the drum out and wiped the larger shiny roller clean, because it was covered with toner, and I didn't know whether that was normal or not. When I reassembled everything and tried printing a page, the printed side came out perfect, but the back of the page still had some small light gray smudges on it. Now, I'm wondering if my drum is in need of replacement, and if so, could it be my fault? If not, do I need to clean a part of it or something. I'm quite frustrated with this, because I live at school and in addition to myself, several housemates of mine depend on this printer. Plus, I don't have the money to buy a new drum. So, I'm crossing my fingers for some good news. Thanks in advance for any help.
Re: Brother HL-2040 Printing With Strange Gray Marks on...
Sounds to me like the toner - that is the toner cartridge has the wrong toner in it. The drum should be OK - clean it up first and then use a genuine toner cartridge OR you can buy our refill kit on eBay - search for Brother HL2040 - michellem6123

Brother ML-2040 Toner Light Reset When replacing the toner cartridge in the Brother HL-2040 with a new cartridge (compatible or remanufactured) the user may experience a problem with the toner light staying on, even with the new toner installed. The procedure below has worked for many folks, so give it a shot. Open the front cover of the Brother HL-2040 and leave open while completing the following steps: 1.) Turn the printer off. 2.) Hold the ‘go’ button while turning the printer on. All panel lights should be on. 3.) Release the ‘go’ button once all lights are off. 4. )Press the ‘go’ button 2 times. 5.) Pause. 6.) Press the ‘go’ button 5 times. 7.) The toner light should be off. 8.) The paper light should be on. 9.) Close cover. The ready light should be the only light on. Once all steps are successfully completed your “low toner” light should be fixed.-------------From Brother Service Bulletin

You have a one year warranty with Brother if you need repair. You might shake the toner, or put a small electrical tape over the little round windows on the toner cart. to use the rest of the toner, and press the go button 3 times to print the report that tells you how many prints you've made, you could just be out of toner again...
There is a window on each end of the toner cartridge that you can cover with electrical tape and keep printing, it shines a light thru and when the toner is too low it says it's empty. The weight can be misleading.
Two things I could suggest you check. First, make sure you have removed all packing from the drum and toner. Sometimes there is a plastic strip on the toner that has to be removed before installation. Also, make sure you are using a Brother brand toner. Some generic brands do not replace the chip in the cartridge and they will not work,
Reset the drum counter by opening the front panel, then hold down the power button for about 5seconds until ALL the leds are on. Then realease the button and close the front panel. Your coutner will be resetted.
