Hello:

>>Not to my Knowledge.
>>Most of the Problems are the Common Ones; Brushes, Bushings and Solenoids are the Most Common Problems with the Ford "N" Series Starter Systems.
>>Once in a Great While you will have a Bad Field Windings or a Bad/Damaged Armature (Due to Bad Bushings), but Not that Often.
Please, Do Not Hesitate, If I Missed Something or you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance.

My ford 8n starter just clicks now. Is there anyway to get this to stop and work corectly?

You likely need to replace the starter solenoid switch,if it just clicks then one of the contacts has worn out.If the starter is a delco, order one for a Chev half ton 1980, and it will be about $30 cheaper and do the same job.

My 1949 8N Ford tractor, the starter just spins

My thought is you need a new "bendix" for lack of a better word. The device I speak of spins out and connects with the flywheel. There is the possibility you have electric problems but based on what you say, I think it is mechanical.

Replacing 8N starter motor

IT helps to loosen the oil canister ahead of the starter and then begin inserting the starter with it tipped upwards and then gradally lift it as you insert it.
The hole should be oblonged out to make for easier insertion of the starter shart..
good luck.

Starter on ford 8n tractor will not engage.

Did you check for voltage at the starter connection at the starter connection AFTER the solenoid.......when the solenoid is energized?
Just because it clicks does not mean it is sending power through.
Does the starter have a good clean ground?
Use a battery booster cable and supply your own battery power right to the starter to check it.Try grounding it too with the other battery booster cable. The starter drive is only used when the starter is turning as it is thrown out into the teeth of the flywheel...cranking the engine and back out away from the flywheel when the starter stops turning.
