Question about Pioneer Televison & Video

Open Question

Pioneer PDP-5010FD (Error Code)

I just purchased a new 5010FD Plasma.  Two problems:  One, tried connecting a Sony Disc Explorer DVD Player (DVP-CX985V) via an HDMI Cable, but couldn't get an image on the screen.  I tried connecting the HDMI connector into a couple of inputs on the monitor, Input 4 and Input 6, but no image would show on the monitor.  Second issue.  Connected a cable box to the monitor via Componet Cables, Input 2.  Worked fine.  Came back after being out of town for one week.  Turned on the cable box, tuned on the monitor.... monitor powered down.  Standby red light blinks 8 times.  Tried unplugging the unit and turning back on after 5-10 minutes same issue.  Disconnected all inputs, sometimes the unit will power up, but anytime I try to connect any inputs the monitor shuts down and the red light blinks 8 times.  Any suggestions on what is causing this issue?  Will a repair fix this or should I push the retailer for a replacement?

SOURCE: 2 year old Pioneer PDP-5070PU plasma TV with red

While not aware of particular problems with this TV (others may know it better) based on the description and my practice with plasmas I'd be inclined to believe that one of the two sustain boards is near end of life.

Could also be problems with the power board, usually caused by dried out capacitors, but could not find reports of that through Google, so my first idea holds.

If you have a screwdriver, muscules to move it around and patience to unscrew all the bolts that hold the back panel you can actually test my theory by disconnecting each sustain in turn and seeing if the TV powers with no problems.

The sustains are the two large boards - one of each side of the display - left and right. Each sustain has a pretty fat power cable connecting it to either the power board or the other sustain (through which it may be getting power).

If I have to guess I'd bet on the Y sustain, which is the larger of the two, usually staying on the left side.

But that's just a guess - could be the other as well.

And, of course, could be just about anything else.

This is just best guess based on experience.

Good luck!

Plasma TV mod PDP-5016HD not turning on

The most likely the TV has a power supply related problem. The most common thing to go out is the circuit board that supply power to the screen. Commonly called a Backlight Inverter Board.
I can't say it's 100% the problem because I can't actually look at the tv over the internet.
If by chance the TV is still under warranty, go that route.
If not under warranty and If you have some electronic experience, you can purchase a Service Manual over the internet and diagnose the source of the problem and fix it by soldering in the new part. The Service Manual will give you circuit diagrams, test points, and part# lists. Usually, cost under $20.

I hope I shed some light on the subject for you.
