SOURCE: I bought a Simpletech signature

Your USB port is incapable of supplying the required amps of power. ALL these little 2.5" drives need up to 1000 milliamps of juice, regardless of who makes them. I have yet to find any PC that can supply more than 500ma from a single USB port (and even that is optimistic). That is precisely why several portable drive manufacturers supply a USB splitter lead to facilitate an extra 500ma of power. (But some charge extra for this lead).

SImpletech supply the splitter lead with the drive, so please try it, as it may solve the problem.

In addition, some makers, including Simpletech, provide a 5 volt auxiliary power socket on the drive case in (unacknowledged) admission that many people do not have a second spare USB port and that, even if they have, it isn't a reliable source of power anyway! Also, they don't supply the necessary PSU and they deliberately withhold the necessary specification for the needed PSU. You need a 5 volt, 1000 milliamp power adapter costing anything from $10 to $30 (ridiculous!)

These solutions should be tried before assuming the PCs USB port is faulty, because it 'probably' isn't.

Hp nx6110 laptop error power surge on hub port

OK if you have anything plugged into the USB Ports at bootup, unless Keyboard or Mouse, remove everything, and see if it boots normally, if it does, then the "Hub" you are using may be faulty, or a device you are using is drawing a lot of current at switch on and overloading the USB bus, that can only supply 500mA. If it still does it, and you do use a USB KB & Mouse, then remove them one at a time & reboot, between, and see if it was one of them causing the problem. If you have nothing attached then your internal USB bus is flaky.

Power surge on hub port message

unplug your mp3 player immediately!! it will fry your mp3 player if you leave it plugged in!! try adjusting the player's settings and seeing if there is somewhere to switch it from '1000mah' to '500mah' or lower. try that. if it still gives the error try a different usb port.

Nothing hooked up to usb ports but computer tells me power surge

umm, usually you can't. your board is probably feeding too much current/voltage to the usb ports or someone shoved a paperclip into the port and shorted it out (frying the power supply to the usb ports) in any case, you will probably need a new motherboard or power supply.

Have a close look at the USB ports, make sure you don't have any bent contacts touching the outer part of the connector and shorting.

Power sugre with m240

Hi there. This message would indicate any one of the following: 1. You have a lot of USB devices plugged in to your computer, and the maximum power supply for the USB ports has been exceeded by plugging this player to your computer. It would be best if you unplugged 1 or 2 of the USB devices connected for the time being. 2. You are plugging the player on your front USB port, and may need to plug it in the rear USB port to acquire ample power supply (front USB ports do not get as much power as the rear USB port -- sad but true) 3. You are using a laptop and may need to try another USB port on that computer. Purchasing a self-powered USB hub would be ideal as it gets its power supply directly from the wall electrical socket.

Power surge on hub port error msg

The printer is the problem, obviously but, also try using a different USB cable to see if that doesn't help! When plugging up th cable, look for anything out of the ordinary! If changing the USB cable doesn't resolve the situation then it could be something shorted out in your printer and you need to take it to a service shop for repair! regards, babb
