    I tried this but no luck. I got a disk cleaner and nothing either. wandering if the drive is bad. Also tried to uninstall the drivers and reinstall but nothing also. there no conflict in the devise manager. Yet the drive spins and trys but sometimes says insert a cd

    The Computer is a Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5892 System Unit
    Model # PSLC0U-02501F

    also I think you are right about the drive being bad because someone else had me try to boot up from the very beginning by pressing F12 and booting from the CD and I couldn't get it to do that. So if anyone is trying to check there CD then before anything boots up. Then turn computer on and press F12 as it will let you and try to boot from CD with a bootable disk would be window recovery or just any windows operating disk and see if it will do that. If it won't read the CD, but you can here it and see the light working then either the the drive needs cleaned or it is bad.
    I read somewhere else that you may take a bad drive and switch on the back of it to master instead of slave may fix CD drives sometimes, but don't know how to go about that.
    Thanks for the Helping if you can't get the F12 button to do something . Push it over and over from when you first turn the computer on until it lets you look at the list where you can choose to boot from CD.

    take a slightly damp qtip and clean they eye of the drive (the laser). then take another dry qtip to dry off the laser, do all of this gently and then try different dvd's and cd's and see if the drive reads anything.

Try cleaning the lense with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol, if that does not help then the drive needs to be replaced you can fin it cheap on ebay bet. $25-$30 and it just swaps out.

    Yes the drive is bad, repairing it is more expensive than the drive itself, what model is your Toshiba? I can send you a link to buy a used/like new one. And directions on replacing it.

    There are 3 different drives for your model, You'll need to Take the drive out and send me the make and model number, to do this at the bottom of the Laptop exactly where the Dvd/ drive is located you'll see a screw take it out and pull the drive forward, that's it.

Hello.. I need some help. I am using toshiba satellite a1O system laptop was fyn till nw..all of a sudden windows doesnt load..when i turn the power on, the toshiba logo is shown..then black...

First thing you do is to see what hard disc installed in your laptop. You can check that by checking it in your bios system. To check in your bios system first turn off your computer then press delete while your laptop is booting up. Then you will see if there is a hard disk detected in your lap top if there is a detected hard drive this means you have a problem in your windows installed in your lap top.
There is also a reason why those message appear if the first boot of your laptop is the CD/DVD ROM. Check you CD/DVD ROM if there a CD inside this may the first on to read while the laptop booting up. Remove the cd inside your CD/DVD ROM. Then restart your laptop. Check your hard disk connector it may have some loose contact thats why your laptop did not recognize the hard disc.
Hope this can help keep on touch with fixya. Hope to hear some testimonial from you. . .

My cd/dvd rom (sd r2412) wont' read anything...first it did not read dvd's , now it does not read cd's....

The cd/dvd drive could have failed. Try contacting Toshiba's support line and seeing if there is anything they can do. Your laptop's specs also suggest it is probably pretty outdated and you could use a newer laptop if you can afford it.

I currently have no os loaded on my laptop....when installing ubuntu/linex on it I continue to get errors... is my harddrive done? Do I need to replace it?

It could either be:
* the CD-ROM drive is mis-reading,
* the CD-ROM media is damaged,
* the hard-drive is mis-writing or mis-reading,
* the RAM in your computer is mis-writing or mis-reading.

Download the free 'MEMTEST86+' software, and burn it to a bootable CD-disk. Boot your computer from the CD, and it will "exhaustively" do a "test" of your RAM.
