Indeed it is a software problem. This was a known issue with Microsoft, and you can follow this link to download the patch that will rectify the problem.

My computer no longer "sees"

hello
at end of this instruction set, see link to review more questions/answers,as your issue with CD/DVD ROM will vary .

This document applies to HP and Compaq desktop computers with Windows XP, Me, and 98. Use this document to make Windows and the CD writing software recognize the CD or DVD writer drive. Start at Step 1; do not skip to other sections until Step 1 has been completed. Step 1: Does Windows detect the CD or DVD drive? Use Device Manager to determine if Windows is recognizing the drive:
  1. In Windows XP, click Start , and right-click My Computer . In Windows 98 and Me, right-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
  2. In Windows XP, select Properties , click the Hardware tab, and then click the Device Manager button. In Windows 98 and Me, select Properties , and click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Click the plus sign (+ ) next to DVD/CD-ROM Drives (or similar) category.
  4. Do the following depending on what is listed in the DVD/CD-ROM drives category:
    • If the CD or DVD drive name is missing , the drive is not being detected by Windows. Close Device Manager and skip to the section CD or DVD drive is not recognized by Windows .
    • If a drive name is shown but is disabled (icon is marked with a red X, c00877300.gif ), the drive has been disabled. Right-click the drive name and select Enable . You may have to restart the computer to complete the enabling process. The drive should work correctly once it has been enabled. NOTE: If the drive cannot be enabled, a required service or driver that the drive needs is not functioning or has been disabled. Click the plus sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and troubleshoot any problems found according to any error codes in Device Manager. Resetting the BIOS may also resolve this problem.
    • If a drive name is shown but contains an alert icon (an icon marked with an alert symbol, c00877301.gif ), then use the section Using Device Manager error codes to troubleshoot the problem. You may also use the next section Disc burning software does not recognize the original drive to reset the drive configuration.
    • If the CD or DVD drive is listed as normal but your disc burning software does not recognize the drive, Device Manager shows no special icons c00877302.gif . Windows is detecting the drive but the writing software does not. Leave Device Manager open and continue with the next section Disc burning software does not recognize the original drive .

My CD-ROM is not recognising any CD/DVD And CD-ROM icon is also missing in my computer menu

Go to Control Panel/System/Hardware, delete the CD-ROM, and reboot so the system can find it again. If it doesn't come back after the reboot, then try physically detaching and reattaching the drive (with the power off, of course).

No dvd/cd rom icon

From what I read, Acer Empowering software is no big deal. Some say it's fine, others say nothing worthwhile. If you aren't thrilled with it, you might consider uninstalling it and seeing if it brings your CD-rom back. If you want to keep it or uninstall of Empowering software doesn't work, uninstall the CD-rom and then let Windows rediscover and install it again.

Go into Device Manager, right click on CD-rom and choose uninstall. Close out and restart.

My cd rom drive is missing from my computer

HI SIR,
Its easy to solve this..

how to solve:
  • Make sure your CD ROM drive is properly connected to your computer.
  • Double click on your My Computer icon and click on "View system information" under the System Tasks area at the top left hand corner of the window.
  • Next, choose the Hardware tab and click on the Device Manager button.
  • look through the list for the DVD/CD ROM drives and click on the little plus sign ( + ) to expand it.
If one does, it means that your CD ROM device is connected and that it does have power. If nothing comes up, you may have some internal connection problems with the power and the ribbon cables. To check on this, shut down your computer, remove the two cables that go along with the connectors on the back of the drive and reset them firmly back in. Also, check on the ribbon cable and ensure that it is plugged tightly into the motherboard.

When you have done all of that, restart your computer and try the above directions again (in the device manager). If you still don't have anything listed, your CD ROM drive may be defective. Now, if you have tried all of this and nothing has worked yet, as I said before, it could be a software problem. So, let's go ahead and explore that.

In the device manager listing, right click on the item that appears in the list and choose Properties. Look in the Device Status area and see if there an error (could be error code 19, 31, 32, 39 or 41). If this is the case, you won't be able to use the original software for your CD ROM drive, but you could do a search online for your drive's vendor and see if you can download the latest driver software for your particular CD ROM drive. This along with a restart of your computer can solve the problem.

Another thing that may help is the system restore feature that Windows XP offers. Read about system restore here before you go any further. A system restore can place your computer back to a time when it was working properly. If you can remember the last time you know your CD ROM drive was working right, do a restore for that date. This may solve your "missing drive" issue. With any luck, it will.

thank you
vino

Cd-rom driver

Hello, you are so funny SeekPCRepair, when my neighbours went missing she thought it was personal (she has had some wicked pc issues last year!!!) Piap, has the CD rom icon dissapeared off the my computer window? This can mean evil gnomes have stolen it ( a fellow once said) but actually, it is something that sometimes just happens. It can be there one minute and gone the next.
You do need to go through the steps above as SeekPCRepair has said, but if nothing above works, and no entries at all appear for your drive under device manager ( found by clicking my computer, then view system info, then hardware, then device manager) and you have opened up your pc, and checked if the power ribbons (cables) are secure, and then looked for it again, it is either defective or a software issue. If all else fails, you can try editing the registry, as it may be corrupt driver files but first you need to try uninstalling the drive and reinstalling it if you can find the driver deatils. If this does not work, try downloading new driver from manufactures website. Install with this and see if it works. Post back if none of this works above and i will tell you how to step by step edit the registry to repair corrupt files.

Missing cdrom drive

Is the LED of your CD ROM blinking? If yes then go to device manager by right clicking the My Computer icon and then click the Properties command. In the Properties window select the Hardware tab and then click the device manager. Is the CD ROM entery there! yes> right click and enable the device. If no then reformat your hard disc and reinstall.
In case your CD ROM's LED is not blinking (Rarest case) then simply check all the cables connected to it, atleast the power cable. if it is still not working, your CD ROM got damaged and there is a time to change it.

CD-ROM icon missing on screen

Hedge,

Can you see it in your device manager? if you can't then its a physical problem which means you will need to double check your physical connections between the cdrom and your motherboard as well as the power connections.
Another way to double check is go to your bios and see if the biois detects your cdrom. If it doesnt then i think you cdrom is dead.

smeags.
