Question about Mitsubishi WD-52525 52" Rear Projection HDTV

Static-y picture and sound, menu visible

Hi,
I have MITS WD-52525, 2.5 years old. On 10/11 no problems, on 10/13 it turned on with symptoms below.

Background: the power light is a normal solid green. The lamp is original but dimmer. TV has not been moved, no recent storms, it is on a 750va UPS.

Symptoms 10/13: very static-y audio on all sources, mixed with some of actual audio.  The picture shows none of the actual source, on cable it is a very static-y (not at all snowy like an unused station) image of dark and light. Video game source is a solid green or blue with some concentric bright single line rectangles,  nothing like Halo 3 should look.

The TV menu comes up and is usable, but it shows some distortion like the source behind it.  On the video game source the menu has some bright lines and off colors, and on cable it has some dark spots.

I read posts about replacing capacitors and I can do that, but the symptoms don't match mine. Is there a tech training manual for this TV that someone can forward, or some advice before I call a tech?  I have the service manual that shows how to get the DM board out, but it has no diagnostic info.

So far I have not moved it or attempted any repairs (other than pressing front reset button with a pen.)

I don't think so.  Although my lamp is nearing it's age, I could see the menu pretty much OK.  Failure modes for the lamp itself seem to be dimmer-dimmer-dark, with the warning light actually working on the TV for that. My lamp light is green.

But I have new info. I took it apart and found 7 capacitors bulging on top.  There was 1 on the DM board, 1 of the 2200uF 16V caps. Then 4 more of the same type on the Power Supply board were bulging on top.  These 4 are in an L on the upper right.  Another 2 capacitors in the middle of the left side were bulging, 3300uF 10V caps.  So I used techman's reference and ordered new Panasonic parts from Digikey.  Total of about $15 incl. shipping.

Of course you have to take out roughly 45 screws to even see the boards.  And then get them out and do the soldering without breaking anything else. I'll try it though to save $700-$1000 which is the range of quotes I've seen online.

I still wish techman or some expert would comment on my symptoms and say whether they are consistent with those particular caps going bad.

Update on my problem: A person in from this forum forwarded the pdf of the service manual and using that I found the DM board and power supply board. There were 7 bad capacitors total.

I replaced the capacitors Saturday and put the TV back together *mostly*, not to the point where the rear case fan was plugged in. I had a blinking amber light on the front. I plugged in the case fan and TV still had blinking amber light and also a burning smell. I gave up and went to bed, visions of $800 repair bill in my head.

Sunday I double-checked all my soldering and vacuumed out a bunch of dust and crud from the sticky fabric where the USB cables plug in at the top. I also blew out with air all the boards from above and vacuumed up that crud. The soldering all looked good. I put the TV back altogether and plugged it in. This time I had a blinking green light, such as you normally get when power is restored or reset. When it stopped I turned the TV on and had normal picture and sound. Success!

So this is really solved, but I don't know how to link it to the solution that really was the one: techman's service guide for replacing the capacitors.

Well can't say for sure but it sounds like a problem with the formatter pcb. The formatter is the pcb that the DVI cable from the Engine runs to. From what I understand is that there may be caps on there that can cause that problem. But that is a guess. I would replace all those other caps as well because they will give you other problems later.

Our Mitsubishi WD 52525 goes to blue screen and shuts off.

It sounds like you TV is overheating and the video is suffering and the lamp is overheating as well. Also, if your TV is over 2-3 years old, the mirrors (behind and below the big front screen) desperately need to be cleaned. Clean all filters and fans as well. (Look on side and behind the unit). Is the TV in a "hot" environment and/or dirty environment? DLP TV's are NOT sealed units. They need to be cleaned every few years to work well to have a good, clear, bright picture.

You would need the service manual for that adjustment. It is outlined in the service manual on how to adjust the tilt. It is a mechanical adjustment. You can get the service manual emailed to you instantly after purchase at this link.

HEY AWOOD,THIS SYMPTOM IS DUE TO POWER CAPACITORS GOING BAD IN THE POWER SUPPLY AND THESE CAPS CAN CAUSE A COUPLE DIFFERENT SYMPTOMS,YOURS SEEMS TO BE THE MOST COMMON.IF YOU'RE TECHY ENOUGH YOU CAN REMOVE THE BACK AND GET ACCESS TO THE TWO PLUGS ON THE LITE ENGINE TO TEST (WITH A VOLTMETER) THE 5 VOLT SUPPLY ON I BELIEVE PLUG J19 PINS 1 AND 3.IF LOW THEN REPLACE 6 CAPACITORS ON POWER BD. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE IF THEY ARE BAD JUST BY A VISUAL INSPECTION.GOOD LUCK JOE TV
