Have you tried reading the instructions? How long did you buy it? Try to press the pad or stick like a button inwards. That is how I get the image to go on my digital camera. Did it work?

Camera opens normally, only takes black pictures

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

All pictures taken are just Blackness

is there a view finder on this camera? often when there is a screen and a viewfinder there is a button to toggle between them, my sony camera has such a button although it is not a cybershot. i imagine the button says "dis" or "LCD" and just needs to be toggled. if the display were bad you would not be able to view pictures on it. display works must be configuration issue.

400D total blackness

Hi, sounds like a shutter problem, try taking a picture in manual mode with an exposure of around 1 second and the aperture stopped right down (small appiture)in daylight.
when you say its not pretty i guess you mean blurred?

If your still getting a black image, take the lens off and put it in bulb and press and hold the shutter release if the shutter dose'nt open and stay open while you hold it then its certainly the shutter.

Its not your fault, all the eos cameras are prone to shutter failure
some are fine for 50,000+ shots others die within a thousand
My fingers are crossed for you that its under warranty. If not a repair in the uk can be done for around 140ukp or $200 in the US, the shutter isn't expensive (about $60) but its several hours work to replace it

Best of luck

Take a picture and download it to your computer. If the picture is also black, then this might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info (make sure you read the latest reader comments in the first link. You might get very very lucky if Canon fixes this with your model camera :-)

Not capturing a photo

Try taking a picture with the camera upside down.  Sounds odd, but it's a possible check to see if the AF mirror is hanging up.
