XP Keeps rebooting with LAN Cable connected

Hi,
Mine is Dell Dimension 5150 Desktop PC.
Recently it statred behaving strange.

1) It stays in restart loop with LAN cable connected. The PC runs until the windows login. Once after login it restarts immediatly. But if you remove the LAN cable, It starts normally and no problem.

Here is what I already tried,

1) I thought it could be a virus and did full system scan with Norton Antivirus. No Virus found.
2) I tried to boot without LAN cable and inserted the cable after successful booting. As soon as I connect the calbe, the system reboots. If I have the LAN disabled before connecting the cable, it dosn't reboot. But as soon as I enable the LAN it restarts.
3) I did complete system restore to the factory original condition. No sccuess. The problem exists.
4) I removed all the external cards I had(External PCI Video Card, Wireless LAN PCI card). Still the problem exists.
5) I removed the CMOS battery and replaced. No Success.
6) Installed the LAN Driver again. No Success.

Anbody have the solution for this. Pls help!

Thanks,

    Hi Martin,

    Thanks for your response.

Do you mean Wake On LAN?

Let me check my BIOS setting and try to disable it and see.

    PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

All I did was running a Dell Diagnostics download from Dell\support.

It took about 1 hr to complete the whole diagnostics. After completing it did not report any problem. But my restart issue went away and PC running normally for last 3 days.

Have you tried going into the bios setup before windows loads up? You may have a setting to choose startup on lan. Just turn that off and hit F10 and enter.
To enter the bios setup keep pressing delete after truning on the computer until the bios screen appears. Don`t change anything unless you know what you are doing.

Once on the bios screen you need to go to the advanced bios features. Once there go to power management and you will find the entry for lan and can disable it. Bear in mind that you bios display screen coudl be a little different to mine but if you look aroudn you will find it.
    Good luck

We have BT broadband. When we occasionally have to reset the router, everything except the 2 Dell Dimension 5150 desktops works via wireless. They refuse to reconnect. All the other Desktops / laptops work...

Not sure exactly what your hardware setup is, but I would reboot the broadband router, then reboot the wireless router. Everything should come up clean, but give it at least 5 min. To help connect after reboots, you can choose "repair" from the wireless icon in the system tray (XP?) or renew your IP address. Start --> Run... and type ipconfig /renew

Hope this helps!

Dell Dimension 5150 Boot Problems!

You can probably try two things here.

1) Go to the BIOS and reset the defaults.
2) Clear NVRAM from your Dell computer. Here is how you do it.

Dell Dimension 5150 CD door closes quickly.

If an application is attempting to access the CD drive, the door will close. Put the CD in first and then launch the application.

Also possible a problem with the eject/load mechnism in the CD drive.

Need a reboot disk

Does it have a Microsoft sticker on the case giving you a serial number and product type: 2000, XP Home , XP Pro etc

If it has one then you need to find a buddy with a copy of that software and hope that it is compatible with the version you have on your system.

If not then it is off to the shop for a fresh copy

Start up Problem

hi carlogb,

1) dissconnect any external hardware like usb devices, modems, card reader, etc and try to restart windows.

2) If 1st step doesnt works, open the chasis and check all the cables are connected properly or not. Reseat all the cables if possible.

3) If 2nd step doesnt work, remove the cards like lan card or any other pci cards from the motherboard and restart computer again.

TheAssembler
