Question about Apple iPod Photo MP3 Player

4 Answers

Nothing on the ipod site has helped!

I have an ipod photo that I've had about 3 years and paid $500 for including accessories. And...it's not  under warranty but i know how those rip off warranties are. Companies just take money for something that they never agree to.

Anyway. I was upstairs listening to my ipod using my wireless belkin FM transmittor which is made specifically for ipods. I had listened to about 7 songs then it stopped playing. So I went and looked and it started going through songs really quckly (sort of like channel search on tv) it just brought up random songs like it was going to play them and then switched to another song but nothing ever played... so i clicked play and nothing happened and I pressed menu + the middle button and reset it...After I reset it, the screen appeared smaller and black and white and there was the folder with the ! on it.... so i went to my computer to restore the Ipod. When I got it hooked up, the do not disconnect sign came up on the ipod (smaller than usual and still black and white (not red))... even though it didn't  need to be updated b/c it was just updated last night.

So when it got hooked up with itunes, a popup came and siad "itunes has detected a corrupted ipod... etc..restore it" so I restored it and when it told me to go plug it up to an external power source, i looked at the ipod and it still said do not disconnect... i waited and nothing so i disconnected it (folder witih ! came back up) and i plugged it into an external power source (wall adaptor)... well that didn't really work at all! The folder came up still and then the ipod shut itself off (quite loudly; like when you hold the power button down on the PC to force it to turn off) it did that about three times so i unplugged it and tried restoring again. The same exact thing happened. I've tired it over and over and nothign is happening. Every time i have it hooked up, it says do not disconnect yet it does absolutely nothing. Rihgt now, it still says do not disconnect... and it's still black and white! I don't understand what's going on with it. I know it's a little old but for the ammount of money that apple gets and as much as I paid them for this piece of crap (Which i don't abuse or handle roughly and i keep it in a case)... they should either help me with it or make better made products...

Someone plesase help! I just want it working again...as soon as it works again im selling it and buying a different brand.... I'm tired of apple.

I was having similar problem as described here - folder with exclamation mark/ipod with sad smiley with exclamation mark/ipod not being recognised with itunes - i tried all sorts of remedies, resetting etc.... nothing worked. Read Frits solution here (give it a good slap in the palm of your hand!) as a last resort thinking this is a bit pointless.
Well, lo & behold it actually worked!! I coluld feel my ipod start whirring back into action. All the music on it re-appeared & its working again!
Thanks very much Frit - youre a star. An old fashioned whack still works sometimes! :)

Wow - this really worked!  I had the sad mac / exclamation point startup issue on my 60 gig iPod, and it would not show up in iTunes, on the Desktop, nothing, to allow a restore or anything.  Manually resetting it did nothing.  I whacked it really hard (while off) on it's SIDE (that seemed to do the trick - I slapped it into my hand on the bakside but that didn't help), and BOOM - the apple logo appeared, and all is well again.
I wish I would have known this before throwing out my previous 20 gig one!
Thanks for the tip.

Sounds like your hard drive may be stuck. This is going to sound silly, but give it a shot. With the iPod powered off, slap it hard against the palm of your hand. Then do the re-set (toggle hold on off, hold dwon center and menu buttons).
See what happens. Sometimes the hard drives on these things just stick and need to be jarred loose.
You'll most likely need to do a restore after trying this.

If you know anyone with a sound dock you may want to try plugging it into one. I had that same problem and only the sound dock got me back to normal

Why is my i pod not charging?

this might help you

Faulty cable If something is wrong with the FireWire or USB cable that came with iPod, it may not supply any power to charge the battery. Note: Only iPod models with a Click Wheel can get power from a high-powered USB port using the supplied cable (includes iPod mini, iPod (Click Wheel), iPod photo, iPod with color display, iPod nano, and Fifth Generation iPod).
  1. Make sure you are using the cable that came with iPod. Some third-party cables may not work properly with iPod.
  2. Make sure nothing is in or blocking your computer's FireWire or USB ports.
  3. Check the connections to make sure the cable is completely plugged in.
  4. Try another known-good FireWire or USB cable if available.

How can I use iTunes to put photos on iPod nano?

"You can easily copy images from your computer to the iPod nano using photo sync in iTunes. Please note that you cannot import photos into iPod nano directly from a digital camera or media reader. If you connect an Apple iPod Camera Connector or Belkin Media Reader for iPod w/Dock Connector to iPod nano, you'll get a message on your iPod screen that says, ""The currently attached accessory is not supported by this iPod."" If you connect a Belkin Digital Camera Link for iPod w/ Dock Connector to iPod nano, you'll see a ""Do not disconnect"" message briefly, then the main iPod menu appears. For information on other iPod accessories that don't work with iPod nano, Some accessories that work with other iPod models won't work with iPod nano. Here are some items to note and the affected accessories: Photo Import iPod nano cannot import photos from an accessory (use iTunes to copy photos to iPod nano). It will not work with third-party card readers or with the Apple Camera Connector. If you connect such a device, you'll see an error message that displays for about a minute and reads, ?The currently attached accessory is not supported by this iPod.? Voice Recorders (Microphones) Like iPod mini, iPod nano does not work with third-party voice recorders. Apple iPod Remote Because iPod nano does not have a remote port, it won't work with any accessory that requires it, such as Apple iPod Remote. Headphones Port Location The headphones port on iPod nano is located on the bottom, therefore, it won't work with any third-party accessory that requires that this port be located on the top. No Video Out iPod nano does not support video out through the dock connector or the headphone port. iPod nano is not compatible with the Apple iPod AV Cable designed for iPod with color display (and iPod photo). If you need to use any of the above devices, you'll need to use an iPod model that supports the accessory. "
