Question about Califone International 1030AV Turntable

1 Answer

Trying to fix an old record player - Califone. It seems to be making a scratchy sound even though I have replaced the needle. It almost sounds like when the two wires from a speaker touch... same sound... but I opened it up, and that's not the case; wires are free and clear. Speaker (at least viewing it) appears to be fine. Any thoughts? Someone know of web resources to help out?

Cool. Yes, I'm in the process of trying another speaker... but to do that, I'm finding myself needing to bid for it on ebay. When it gets here I'm going to try it right away. I'm thinking that sounds about right.

May be the "winding" on the speaker. If it has got damp at some point(you may not notice any on the casing) the cardboard tube that the coil is wound around swells and "rubs" in the speaker. Thus producing a scratching sound. Try connecting to another speaker, just to test and if it sounds fine then that is what it is.

Califone 1435k This record player from the 70s runs great and came highly recommended but the 33 records we're trying to play are sounding much too fast. Any ideas on how to fix this?

This is an idler wheel drive turntable that uses a small rubber wheel, that when engaged pushes on the motor spindle and also on the rim on the underside of the platter. The spindle on the motor is stepped so as you shift speed the idler wheel moves up or down the spindle and that changes the speed of the platter. It could be the the shifting mechanism is dodgy You can try to loosen it by gently shifting the speed from 78 to 16 and back again. But the idler wheel rubber might be in trouble too.

One of two things. The deck has got a static problem. Perhaps caused by an earth connection problem.
Or you have a bad earth connection on the cartridge.

Plugged it in and turned it on. Put a record on and moved the needle over. Nothing happened.

Hi.
From your description it sounds as though the drive belt requires replacing. If you are experienced, remove the platter to get the belt out carefully.
If you are not tchnicallly minded, take it to your nearest audio/hifi repair shop. should be no more than £20.00.

There's not enough pressure to keep the stylus down in the grooves. Increase the weight (on the end of the arm).

Record player sounds scratchy and tinny

Playing records is a contact sport.

Since the needle touches the record -- as opposed to a laser reading a CD -- any bit of dust or mold translates to annoying pops and hisses.

Record cleaners get down into the record grooves to extract dust and particles.

Or you may need a new needle.

Sound scratchy

Seems to me that the first thing you want to do is find out if your problem comes from the camera speakers/output, or if it records them scratchy. Take one of the "scratchy" cassettes, and play them on another device to see if it transfers bad audio. If it does, then you're worst off offcourse, more of a repair. If it doesn't you can decide you don't need a repair, as long as it does the job. Good luck
