The cold air from freezer section passes from freezer to refrigerator .
Start out with the easy stuff first...make sure the lights go out when you close the door(s), make sure the doors are closing properly and the gaskets are closing fully and not torn. Check to make sure the evaporator fan in the freezer is working, this fan blows the cold air around. If the fan is not working, possible bad fan motor - check for power to the fan motor and also check the fan switches around the door openings, ( if your fridge has these switches, not all do ). A common problem cropping up in the last several years has been the air damper not opening up and allowing the cold air from the freezer to be blown into the fresh food section of refrigerators. For many years the air damper was manually operated and now we have motorized controlled or temperature controlled or thermister and electronic boards controlling air dampers, and if this device sticks closed the FF section will normally warm up. An example picture of "one" style and an air damper ( called a diffuser by Whirlpool ). Next would be to check the condenser tubing, a good place to start is to make sure the condenser coils are not built up with dust!! Make sure the condenser fan motor is also working properly. Check for any "clicking on and off" noises from the compressor, is the compressor running. The most common fridge "not cooling" problem is a frost free failure. Remove the access panel in the freezer section to expose the evaporator coils. If the coils in the freezer section get plugged up with frost, this frost will block the evaporator fan motor from blowing the cold air around. The fan blade can also hit this frost and either become noisy or stop altogether. Locating the defrost timer can be tricky....they are often hidden behind the back bottom corners of the fridge at the bottom, in the last few years the timers have been located in the ceiling of the fresh food section, and some behind the cold control cover. Once you locate the defrost timer, slowly turn the screw like wheel in the middle of the defrost timer with a straight screwdriver until the fridge shuts off. You are now in defrost. If the defrost heater(s) comes on now, replace the defrost timer and defrost thermostat. If the heater(s) does not come on, you can ohm test the defrost heater for continuity or volt test for 120 volts to the heater(s). If you have no power to the defrost heater(s) you can also bypass the defrost thermostat to see if the defrost heater will come on, join the 2 wires together to bypass the defrost thermostat. If the heater now comes on, replace the defrost timer and defrost thermostat. If the heater itself is bad, defrost the fridge with a hair dryer, replace the defrost heater* and defrost thermostat. If the defrost timer seems "hot" to the touch or is noisy ( like a ticking or screeching noise )...replace it.

Freezer side and fridge side not working, temps are freezer 30 fridge 50

Most likely the condenser coil is dirty. It is under the fridge, clean it with a vacuum, or air pressure, blow it out outside it will ne dusty . There are two to three fans. One by the compressor, called a condenser fan. If it is a side by side, usually there is a fan in the freezer section, and one in the refrigerator section. All need to work. If all this is and the compressor is running then chances are the compressor has bad valves. Make sure there is no ice on the coils in the refrigerator and freezer coils. If there is ice you have a defrost problem, which can be fixed. If the compressor has bad valves, get a new refrigerator.

Sub zero 532. freezer works fine --0 degrees. fridge wont get below 50 degrees. cleaned condenser fins- still no decrease in temp

check the fan that runs between the freezer and the fridge --check fan for ice blockage -debris-or damage / clean or clear blockage --if not running test wiring and connections as well as motor /repair or replace //also check fan damper is not frozen or blocked its flap that opens and closes for air to flow //----ur fridge side is cooled from the the freezer side the cold air is blown in from the freezer if fan or damper is not working correctly than fridge is usually warm and freezer is working properly

The refrigerator side is not very cold (mid 40's-50) but the freezer is fine. Not much cold air entering through vent in the upper left side of the fridge.

check the fan and the damper behind that vent if iced up thaw out damper --if fan blocked or iced up clear if fan not running test fan repair or replace if not running -refrig side is cooled by air from freezer side

Freezer works great, but fridg. will not get below 50

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.

Can't get temp in fridge to go below 50 F. Freezer works fine and makes ice. It started when our area had a heat wave and the inside of our house was 85+ most of the day. The ice maker stopped working,...

Have you checked the evaporator fan(freezer fan), This problem is hard to detect because the fan spins but not fast enough to circulate the chilled air thru the freezer and refrigerator.

Freezer works but refrigerator is staying at 50 degrees

Is this a French door unit? Do you see excessive build up of frost in the freezer on the back panel? Is that evaporator fan motor running? That is what circulates the air from the freezer to the refrigerator.

Whirlpool side by side refrigerator not cooling

Hello danielscynt,
Welcome to Fixya,

You said, freezer is fine the refrigerator is 50-65 does not get colder than 50.the evaporator fan is working but it seems to be blowing very little air
Have a 1998 Hotpoint Model # CTX16CAZDRAD Serial # ZS738209. The refrigerator is not cooling. Temp is at 66 degrees with setting at 5. The Freezer is working, but it seems to be running all the time. Please help!

There are a few things that come to mind!

The Freezer is working, but it seems to be running all the time, you said!.
This could be a bad thermostat!

But lets try some simple maintenance first!
Is your freezer packed too the hilt with packages???????
Where the articles cover the air vents in the freezer?

The freezer and the fridge share the cold air and the passages must not be blocking the cold air from moving out of the freezer!.Search your freezer !

Also your fridge is 10 years old!
Did you ever remove the plastic grille at the bottom of the fridge along the front, and GENTLY run a refrigerator brush along the black metal tubes running back and forth under the fridge?
( You can buy this brush at any hardware store $10.)
They must not be covered in ten years of lint and dust. These narrow tubes carry the freon and run in this parallel fashion back and forth, so they are cooled by the air being **** through them.
if not and they overheat your fridge will get warm.

If the tubes are found to be covered or submerged in dust sometimes I have found them one to two inches thick in dust, and sometimes they are even not visible until you clean the dust out.
Then it will take 10 to 24 hours for the system to get back to full working temperature again. As long as the heat did not cause permanent damage!

if these are not the answer, then you may need a hands on diagnoses!
BUT, most of the time these two things are what I find!

Let me know how it goes!!!!!!!!

Thank You for asking my advice!
Huuum
Please remember to leave a rating for me!

Fridge doesn't get cold enough

If the evaporator fan is not running. The fan itself could be faulty or the door operated light/fan switch could be faulty.

If the evaporator fan is running. The fridge is not defrosting and ice has built up on the evaporator and the air is not circulating properly into the fridge compartment. The fan circulates cold air into the fridge and back through the fridge control which is normally just an adjustable flap which allows more or less cold into the fridge depending on the setting. If the fridge is not defrosting, the defrost timer could be faulty or heater element could be blown.
