Removal of rear wheel gear on a 1972 suburban 10 speed

No, they do not - a chain tool has to be used. Also, a 10 speed (2 gears in front, 5 in the rear) would be quite old, so the rear gear cluster (freewheel) will be worn as well as the chain, and also takes a specialized tool to remove. Replacing both on a Huffy will cost more than the bike is worth.

Best solution to a wheel that's wobbling all over the place because it's missing spokes: Replace the wheel. Why? Straightening a wheel that's messed up because it's missing a few spokes is a difficult art.
Next best solution: Bring the wheel to a bike shop and ask them to replace the missing spokes and true the wheel. Why? See above.
If you insist on having a whack at it, you can remove the wheel by loosening the axle nuts and slipping the wheel out of the frame. You may need to remove a brake pad to get the tire past the brake assembly. Then take the wheel to your friendly neighborhood bike shop and ask them to remove the freewheel assembly from the hub (it requires a special tool that you don't have). Buy some spokes and nipples while you're at the shop. Be very nice to the bike shop people because they'll likely be the folks you'll come back to when you decide you need a new wheel. Once you have the spokes in and the wheel is straight (good luck with that), you can replace the gear cluster without the tool the shop used to take it off, since the freewheel doesn't freewheel in the direction you turn it to put it back on. Proper tools are a necessity. A cassette lockring tool and chain-whip (examples: http://www.roadragecycling.com/2012/10/bike-tools-top-11-you-need-most.html about half way down the page)

The proper lock ring for a Shimano 9 cassette is a Park Tool FR-5. There are other generic tools as well; but the FR-5 is the most common.

Many companies make chain whips too. My favorite (and the one in the picture) is the Wheels Manufacturing tool. It is also one of the most affordable.

For what it's worth: if there is a bike shop near you - many will remove a cassette for a nominal fee. Often $5-10.

Find the joiner link on the chain, remove the retainer clip followed by the link. Remove the chain. Remove the bolt holding the brake arm to the frame. Loosen the axle bolts on the wheel enough to be able to slide the rear wheel out of its slots on the frame.

This is called the "Freewheel" and it is usually one piece. You need a special tool to remove that, and you would only buy it if you were using it in a professional nature, i.e. fixing bikes for a living, yet you may get a local bike shop to remove it for you if you ask them nicely, explain what you want to do and they just may help you. As for getting the gears seperated, they may be able to give you a better alternative.

Remove the dust cap.
Remove the wheel and tire.

Remove the brake drum and hub assembly.
Remove and discard the wheel hub retaining nut.

CAUTION: Support the wheel hub assembly on the wheel mounting face and not on the wheel nut studs.

Using the special tool, install the new wheel bearing (brake disc shown).

Install the circlip (brake disc shown).

CAUTIONS:

Make sure the wheel speed sensor ring is not knocked, damaged and kept free from metal fragments.

Protect the face of the wheel speed sensor ring with a non-ferrous flat block to prevent damage.

Make sure the wheel hub or brake drum is adequately supported and do not allow it to rest on the wheel studs..

Make sure the wheel speed sensor ring is pressed on slowly and squarely until fully seated.

Do not exceed a maximum load of 10 kN.

Using the special tool, install a new wheel speed sensor ring (brake disc shown).

CAUTIONS:

Avoid impact on the wheel speed sensor ring.

Make sure the wheel speed sensor ring is clean.

Avoid any contact between the wheel speed sensor ring and a magnetic surface.

Rotate the wheel hub assembly 10 times counter-clockwise when tightening the wheel hub retaining nut to prevent damage to the wheel bearing.

NOTE: Install a new wheel hub retaining nut.

Install the brake drum and hub assembly.
Apply the parking brake.

CAUTIONS:

Avoid impact on the wheel speed sensor ring.

There is no real torque settings for the rear wheels, except to say, do not over tighten or you will stretch the lugs and the will loosen over time.

Hub & Bearing Removal & Installation To Remove:
Hub bearing assembly (Typical)

1. Release parking brake.
2. Remove rear wheel assembly.
3. Remove rear wheel speed sensor from carrier.
4. Dismount brake caliper and support with mechanic's wire.
5. Remove brake disc.
6. Remove 4 axle hub mounting bolts. Special tool 09432-11000 (Typical)
   
   
7. Using tool 09432-11000 (or suitable gear puller), remove tone wheel.
8. Remove carrier.
9. Remove stakes and remove flange nut.
10. Support bearing outer race flange and press rear axle hub out.
11. Using tool 09432-11000 (or suitable puller), remove inner race from axle hub.

To Install:
Hub bearing assembly (Typical)

1. Apply thin coat of grease to bearing contact surface and hub.
2. Using and appropriate tool, press bearing into hub. CAUTION
   Do not press against outer race of wheel bearing.
   
3. Install flange nut and stake nut until it meets concave portion of spindle.
4. Install carrier.
5. Use an appropriate tool to press tone wheel.
6. Install hub/bearing assembly with rounded portion of outer race facing up.
7. Install 4 hub/bearing assembly bolts and rotate hub to seat bearing.
8. Measure wheel bearing starting torque with a spring balance or equivalent device.
   • Starting torque should measure 15.9 in lb (1.8 Nm) or less
9. Install brake disc.
10. Mount brake caliper.
11. Install rear wheel speed sensor to carrier.
12. Install rear wheel assembly.

Hello. Actually you do not need to remove the gears or even the wheel to replace a broken spoke. If you are mechanically minded and have tools just let the air out of the tire, pull it to one side and replace the spoke. If you do not have the tools, go to a bike shop for this quick fix. J.

If the gears will no longer go back on the bike, I would recommend buying a new wheel (including a new rear hub). It is usually easier and more cost effective to buy a wheel than to replace the hub. To replace the hub (the part that is stripped on your bike) you would also have to remove and replace spokes, etc. Search online for the wheel size you need (probably 26" - you can check the tire size) or take to a reliable bicycle shop and they will gladly help you. Anyway, you need a new hub but probably better off getting a new wheel - much easier.
