Question about Hitachi 61SDX01B 61" Rear Projection Television

I am told my Hitachi 61SDX01B (UltraVision/Ultrascan) has "Green Geometry"

I have a

I have a Hitachi 61SDX01B (UltraVision/Ultrascan) TV that is about six years old. The following is a summary of the problem and what I have do to date:

Symptoms: At the top of the screen, there are lime/green horizontal wavy lines that continuously appear. Regardless of the mode (TV, VCR, DVD) these wavy lime green lines are visible. At the bottom of the screen there is a smaller amount but the same condition. The wavy lines at the top are always lime green, while at the screen bottom, the wavy lines seem to vary in color as the picture changes. A bit of visual distortion (not with the picture) but rather with the channel header word & number that are in green (ex. channel 2, 4, 7, 56) It has a wrapping effect, like green text and channel number are being pulled towards the back of the TV from inside.

Actions: I took off the big black top back cover (it houses the mirror) to inspect the inside. In inspecting (rt to lt) the red, green and blue projectors I saw not comestic issues. The lens did not seem excessively dusty but I did gently, gently vacuum to remove light dust and spider webs from inside the entire area (not alot). Next, I removed the green proejctor lens and I could see the above symptoms only in the green projector which was the only one with a TV picture visible.

I then replaced the big black cover and remove the lower bottom fiberboard cover (it has numerous holes in it). I immediately gently, genlty vacuumed the dust and spiderwebs off the circuit board and surrounding area. I was careful not to touch or bent anything. Needless to say, nothing improved the symptoms. The only other thing I found was that by putting a small piece of white paper of the green project lens (this while I still have the lower fiberboard off), the TV picture had a strong red hue, but the symptoms were gone. Except for the strong red hue and not being able to see any green colors (ex. can't see the channel text/number) the picture was fine.

Questions: What is causing this symptom with the green projector? What should I expect to pay a repairman? Is the repair worth it?

Thanks In Advance sirericbell@comcast.net

I've got the same problem, but with a bunch of blue wave lines. Did you find a way to fix it? Please let me know. Thanks for your time.

Sounds like a convergence promblem.

Here are some of the most common symptoms of a convergence problem.

Screen looks 3D
One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
Screen is bowed in or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence or magic focus section.

Try to adjust the convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Its a fairly easy fix on the Hitachi sets.

You can get a repair kit that includes all the parts from www.TvRepairKits.com. The kit includes a photo instruction guide, original Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, etc.
Everything you need to fix it yourself.

The problem is called green geometry. There is nothing wrong w/the green pix tube.It is critical to get the green geometry

accurate because the red and blue convergence overlays on

the green. If you have more than an alignment issue, that will need

repair before adjustments are attempted.

Hitachi 60" Ultravision TV - bad green tube that is leaking

If this has only started to leak recently, get an estimate from a local servicer for a coolant replacement for that tube. The coolant is corrosive and needs to be cleanedup ASAP from any circuit board that it has touched before there is damage. This is NOT a DIY repair. Expect a repair cost in the $300 range for parts and labor. If the set had a good picture prior to this, it may be worth the repair. This is your call. Do not delay however, as any delay will increase the likelyhood that there will be more damage that needs repair.

Rear projection HD Hitachi Ultravision always has greenish tint

This is what you're going to do, Turn on the Tv and go to the service manual, if the green tint is still there, you have a defective dmd board, but if it's no there, then you have an issue with your video board
