Question about Akai PT5492S 54" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Picture went out on Akai

A few nights ago my girlfriend and I noticed the colors on her Akai big screen looked like they were separating.  Shortly after that it seems like the picture was being squashed in from either side, at some points it looked something like a widescreen image only the black bars were on the sides rather than the top and bottom.  It did this sporadically for a while until finally we turned the tv off.  When we tried to turn it back on it seemed to power on but there was no picture.  When we eventually got picture again the same thing happened (the picture would seem to be squashed in from the side) though it never actually went black while the tv was on.  We turned it off, and again we had trouble getting it to turn on.  Her tv is only a couple years old.  She's had some terrible luck lately with electronics and appliances... please help me figure out what's wrong with her tv and hopefully fix it!

all in one day my screen started by showing a u look at top and bottom. all three colors kind of separated from each other and therefore made shadows on all the writing and double and triple vision on people and images. then it drawed in from sides and showed some black. then it popped in the back and no picture. the sound then came back on with no picture. so i shut it off and unplugged it. what do i have to get to fix this? thank you, Robert Hopkins

My Toshiba cinema series HD separates the red & blue color.

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2
Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

The high voltage power supply for the plasma display has failed. It may or may not be on a separate board that could be replaced the owner. If you find a separate board, it may have its own fuse which you could check for continuity with an ohmmeter.

AKAI LCT2662N screen problems -distorted

that sounds like your LCD controller, since the LCD screen is so big, they will "split" the screen into 2 smaller screens, otherwise it would be so outrageously expensive to have one big massive lcd controller. Your lcd controller is most likely a two-in-one card though, meaning that there are 2 controllers on one board. You'll more than likely need a new controller card for your tv.
