My Dell 4600C, when turned on only shows a picture for 1-2 seconds then goes black. The computer is running, but there is no picture. Do I need a new video card?

Thank you for your response....Problem started on tuesday and when I turn on the computer the monitor looks like it is working fine, then it goes black. At any given time, when I turn the monitir off and immediately back on, the picture comes back on for 1-2 seconds then goes black again. Everything is working, but there is just no picture.....so frustrated!!!

Hi again.
I think it maybe corrupt graphic drivers, start the PC up in safe mode by pressing F8 as it boots, it will take you into a sub menu safe mode is at the top so use your cursor keys to select it, if it lets you into safe mode don't choose system restore!! just right click on computer/my computer and select manage, then select device manager, it will generate a list of devices in the PC, look down the list for display adapters and click on the little cross on the left hand side to expand it, right click on the display adapter and uninstall it, then reboot the PC and start in normal mode, if it is the display adapter it will boot into the operating and reinstall the display drivers by itself.
Please keep me posted.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

If you have a video card installed it will say it in the list of devices, if you copy down what you see in the display adapers and post it back here

I think you are on the right track...but I would download and reinstall the drivers first ...Do you in fact have a video card for sure? And you probably also have integrated video as well. (precluding you from have to purchase a new one unless you are a gamer) Anyway here are the drivers for both possibilities:

Make sure you are on the correct video setting on the monitor using the menu button.
If you are hooked up to dvi you need to make sure the monitor is on the dvi component. VGA same thing.

My dell 4600c monitor will only show a picture when i start or restart it with the monitor power button. it is only on for about 1.5 seconds each time.

If the tower power LED is a Steady Green and the Diagnostic LEDs on the Back are all Green then the monitor itself appears to be the failure point. See if issue occurs with a different monitor. If the tower LEDs are not all green, then reply with the indications

My dell monitor will only turn on for a few seconds then it goes black. it doesnt turn of it just goes black and I can keep doing it and it will keep going black.

Hello,

The picture board on your monitor is bad, since it goes off after few seconds and the power led or button is on, it means the picture board of your monitor has developed fault.

The best thing for you to do now is to take the monitor to a local repairer within your vicinity to help with the replacement of the picture board because the fault is not something you can fix yourself, in order not to complicate issues.

Take care.

I have a dimension 4600c. installed a new power

The power supplies have extra connectors which are not used.

Try doing a system restore to an earlier date when your computer was working ok.

Restart your computer and hit F8 while it is booting. When the menu comes up, select "Last Known Configuration"

This will bring it back to a time when it was working.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Monitor Screen goes black seconds after turn on-

I ended up fixing my problem, but I'm not sure what the solution is. I had some faulty electrical equipment that I was using to power the monitor (220V to 110V converter and a bad power strip) and I got rid of them. I was using the converter because I moved to Israel and I thought I needed to feed the monitor only 110V, but I now realize that the power cord for the monitor has a built-in converter that accepts 220V input. Now the monitor is plugged directly into the wall and is working fine. Try using a different power source (maybe the wiring or plug you're using is faulty). Good Luck!

Dell Monitor comes on but no picture

The monitor isn't getting a signal from the computer, which is why the power indicator goes orange. There are two possibilities:

1) The computer isn't operating correctly. It may not be starting up at all when you turn it on, and you have a "no boot" problem to solve, or

2) The computer is working properly, shows all the signs of normal startup (hard drive activity, Windows startup sound from speakers, etc.). but video isn't reaching the monitor. There may be a problem with the video card (or on the system board if it's integrated video). Or the monitor itself is bad and not detecting the video. You can test this by connectng a known good monitor.
